Wonder - Kilbreda College
Wonder & LJLP Charter
As we journey through 2021, we continue to create, look for and cherish those moments of ‘wonder’ in our lives and celebrate all that is good with joy and gratitude. This core value has permeated our community celebrations and our learning both in and beyond the classroom, encouraging us to be curious, to see the beauty and complexity in all of God’s creation, to contemplate the wonders of God and to celebrate all that is good in our world and lives!
Learning with Wonder is one of the three key principles underpinning the Living Justice Living Peace Charter. The charter has already been used as a foundational document in a few curriculum areas at Kilbreda including our Year 9 BRIDGES Program, VCAL Program and Year 11 Religious Education Seminars. Students have reflected upon the four aspects of Jesus’ ministry and engaged with the questions that accompany each aspect through personal reflection, dialogue and action. Through investigative inquiry and practical experiences, students are encouraged to develop a genuine heart attitude for justice and common good in society that is grounded in faith and the example of Jesus’ ministry. We also intend to use the Living Justice Living Peace Charter as we develop a ‘passion project’ for Year 8 students to undertake in Semester 2 this year.
During Term 1, our Year 12 students participated in a three-day retreat in regional Victoria. The program for the retreat was structured around both the Charter and our core values as a Kildare Ministries school with particular emphasis on this year’s theme of Wonder.
Staff have also explored the theme and value of ‘wonder’ and engaged with the Living Justice Living Peace Charter together this year. Early in the year, Renee Oberin led staff through a deep exploration of Jesus’ ministry and how it informs who we are and what we commit to as members of Kildare Ministries.
The word ‘Wonder’ symbolises excitement and mystery. To me wonder means that we celebrate all the things that are good, both in our school community and the wider community, and to be grateful for what we have. Bliss, Year 11

VCAL COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
We are delighted to have received a 2021 VCAL Innovative Community Partnership grant for our “Yarrabah School Smiles Café Initiative”. Our Senior VCAL students have commenced working in partnership with staff and students at Yarrabah to create an aesthetically welcoming and inviting entrance courtyard and servery at Yarrabah school for the wider community to enjoy. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to have a rich and authentic learning experience while developing an increased awareness and understanding of disability. We look forward to the official opening of the Yarrabah School Smiles Café at the conclusion of the project.
International Woman's Day Breakfast
It was a pleasure to be invited to the Kilbreda’s Breakfast in May. The students were very impressive in their hosting of the morning and the special guest speakers, Dr Amy Swanson captured the room with her serious and some very humorous recounting of her life and career stories. It was a pleasure as always to catch up with so many Brigidine Sisters, who are so very dedicated to their schools and who obviously enjoy staying connected to their former students and colleagues. The theme was the Kildare Ministries' theme of Wonder brought to life by a warm welcome, beautiful images of mothers and their daughters that decorated the hall and a delicious breakfast to start the day. Congratulations Kilbreda- it was lovely to be part of such a special gathering.
