Freeman House

Welcome to 2022!

We would like to start by welcoming everyone back to the 2022 school year. It is one we look forward to as we are hopeful of minimal disruptions to the onsite learning environment. We are really keen to see students at school and spending time learning and working together. In just over a week we have seen lots of events around the school, including a Start Up Program led by the Transition Leader, Mr Andrews and Learning Dispositions Leader Ms Newton. The year 7 students participated in a 4 day program to help them learn more about Hampton Park Secondary College, including setting up their devices, finding their way around the college, reading a timetable, using a combination lock, exploring what it means to be a learner at HPSC and most importantly getting to know their teachers and their peers. Years 8-12 completed a 1 day program on Learning Dispositions.  Learning Dispositions are are skills and attitudes that are a part of our wider HPSC graduate profile. They enhance your ability to learn and persevere through challenges and they equip you with the skills to respond positively during uncertainty. The skills that students focused on where critical and creative thinking, collaboration, resourcefulness and resilience. Students were required to work on teams, complete unique challenges such as brain teasers, creating clothing out of newspaper and skipping challenges.

Meet the Freeman House Team

Welcome to the 2022 school year and a new look Hampton Park Secondary College. At Hampton Park Secondary College we believe in building strong and supportive connections with our students and school community. As a college we believe that by building and promoting a house culture, we are building an environment where students can build a greater sense of belonging to their school and their peers. In 2020, the College launched our house model where students are in one of our four houses. All four houses are named after exceptional Australians who have contributed to society in very different ways

  • Freeman House (red), named after Cathy Freeman, an indigenous female athlete
  • Hollows House (blue), named after Fred Hollows, an ophthalmologist who saved the eyesight of people all around the world
  • Mabo House (green) , named after Eddie Mabo, an activist in Indigenous land rights
  • Walton House (yellow), named after Nancy Walton, a pioneering Australian Aviator

Each house has a team of staff that are leading the house. Each House is led by an Assistant Principal, House Leader, 3 Student Learning Leaders and a House Assistant.

With this we would like to introduce the House Team for Freeman:

House Leader - Georgianne Kios

Ms Kios has previously worked as the Senior School Leader and Middle School Leader at Hampton Park S.C and will be working with Ms Krieg and the year 11 & 12 Student Learning Leaders on Senior School Improvement. Ms Kios teaches VCAL, health and psychology.

Assistant Principal - Kelly Krieg

Ms Krieg joined the college as a member of staff in 2022 and has already hit the ground running, leading the house program, school wide positive behaviours. Ms Krieg is a mentor teacher in 2022 and also teaches a dance class.

Year 7 & 8 Student Learning Leader - Ben Wilson

Mr Wilson is new to the role of Student Learning Leader, joining the team in term 4 of 2021 however he has not wasted any time spending lots of time with the year 7 & 8 Freeman students already to make sure he gets to know them. Mr Wilson teaches maths and science (chemistry).

Year 9 & 10 Student Learning Leader - Matt Cram

Mr Cram may be familiar to some of the year 9 and 10 students that he leads as he was the year 9 Student Learning Leader in 2020 and has spent the last few years as the Student Learning Leader of year 7 & 8 prior to that. Mr Cram teachers PE and science.

Year 11 & 12 Student Learning Leader - Catherine Glenn

Miss Glenn has spent many years in the role of year 12 student learning leader at Hampton Park Secondary College and has lots of experience in working with senior students and supporting them with VCE, VCAL and future pathways. Ms Glenn teaches within VCAL and Science (physics & chemistry).

Values Nominations

It has been a huge start to the term for values nominations and we congratulate all students who have received a values nomination. Each nomination awards students with 5 points to the houses total points. Points are added up over the year and a house is awarded with a trophy for winning the House Title. We would like to publicly acknowledge everyone in Freeman house who has received an award however the list is much too long.

Respect; 28 student nominations

Learning; 84 student nominations

Working Together; 72 nominations

Leadership; 11 nominations

Community; 2 nominations

That is a total of 197 nominations in one week of school or the equivalent of 28 nominations per day in Freeman House. The Freeman House Team feels pretty confident that we can win the house keep if students keep up this exceptional start to the school year.

Attendance

Attendance is one of the single most important factors in enabling students to achieve their potential in school. Attendance makes a big difference in learning outcomes. A student who attends everyday has more opportunities to learn and is able access to their teachers and support staff more often. Every day counts. Essentially, missing one day of school a fortnight is the same as missing four whole weeks of school a year. From Prep to Year 12, that adds up to 1.5 years of school. Additionally, students who develop good habits by going to school every day are building the skills that are necessary to succeed after school, whether in the workplace or in further study.

On saying this, if a day of absence is required, please call the student absence line before the start of the school day or log the absence on Compass. This supports the Freeman Team in identifying where your child is and supports them with working with you as a team to ensure that your child succeeds in their learning goals.

There has been a massive number of students who have achieved 100% attendance already. Well done to the 162 Freeman House students who have attended school everyday for the first week. We look forward to celebrating your excellent attendance with you and will be sending letters congratulating excellent attendance as the term goes on.

As part of our HPSC House renovations in 2021, we asked our House Leaders to create infographics on the famous and influential Australian figures after whom our new houses were named.
