Peppercorns Music

A welcome return to on-campus learning, which has brought with it an exciting opportunity this term for the Peppercorns' music sessions. As part of the transition process, for students moving on to secondary school next year, music sessions are taking place in the BK music room. Students expressed particular interest in the keyboard lab!

We are also extremely fortunate

to have Rose Fearon, BK MYP Music Specialist, join our sessions as a co-educator. After

briefly being introduced to Rose during online learning, Peppercorns students had the

chance to meet her in person this week, as well as getting to know the learning space. Not

only did Rose share with us some of her musical background  but we also found out she has a strong connection to Preshil. Rose herself was an Arlington student!

This term Peppercorns students continue to explore the purpose and function that music

performs in our everyday lives, as a fundamental form of communication and expression.

Following on from our initial group- brainstorming sessions last term, where we considered and shared our thoughts and ideas on ‘What is music?’; ‘Music in our world’ and ‘A world without music’, we continue to look closely at how composers from the earliest times recorded musical history and through to the present day, use the elements of music with clear intention in their compositions.

As we listen and respond to various examples and genres of music, we are noticing how the elements of music ( beat, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, texture, timbre) are combined and manipulated by composers in order to establish mood and connect with an audience. During online learning students began experimenting with making considered choices when combining the elements of music, using the digital looping composition program, Incredibox. They have used compositional components such as intro; layering in and out; solo; tutti and outro. We are now taking on the challenge of putting this knowledge into practice as we create our own ‘live’ versions. We are combining our ostinatos in groups, conducting and performing them for each other using instruments, body percussion and vocal techniques.
