Lighthouse Fives

100 Days of Prep

100 Days of Prep!

This term the Lighthouse Keepers will be engaged in a Unit of Inquiry which will explore the central idea ‘Plants are a life-sustaining resource for us and for other living things'. Our lines of inquiry will investigate: the structure of a plant and how to care for them; how plants provide for us and other living things; how we have a responsibility to use what plants provide us with sustainably. We will explore these lines of inquiry within the conceptual focus of change, connection and responsibility.

This Inquiry will be linked to a Conceptual PlayWorld which, for this term, will be revolving around the story The Lorax, by Dr Seuss. The children will be using their knowledge of plants and what they provide us with in order to ‘Speak for the trees!’ An important part of both our Inquiry and Conceptual PlayWorld will be watering and caring for the natives which were recently planted in The Pines.

We have been very excited about preparing our role play area for its current iteration, a veterinary clinic. The children have been making signs to help organise the area as well as carry cages for the animals. Also featured in the clinic are some new guinea pig enclosures as well as pet treats for those animals being good girls or good boys. An X-ray machine has also been installed to check on the animal skeletons where need be.

For PE this term, we have been joining forces with Talitha and some of the Kinder children in order to practise our ball skills. So far we have been bouncing, rolling, throwing and catching with a range of different sized balls. We have loved getting to know our Kinder buddies as well as getting to know Talitha.

The Lighthouse children have been very excited about our 100 days of Prep celebration, which will be taking place on the 4th of August. In preparation for the momentous occasion, the children have been making paper chains, exactly 100 links long, to decorate the classroom along with various other random decorations.

They have each gathered a collection of 100 items for display in the classroom and also written invitations for members of the Preshil community that they would like to invite to stop by during the day. On the day itself there will be much exploration of the number 100 as well as time to reflect on our growth over the past 100 days. Some of these reflections will be videoed and edited together for safe keeping!

For the next 4 weeks we will have Melissa joining us in the Lighthouse as she completes her teaching practice. During this time she will be observing me as well as doing some guided teaching. The children have done a wonderful job orientating Melissa to her new surroundings.
