Careers Update
YEAR 10s - SELECTING 2022 COURSES
Over the past several weeks students have been learning about and exploring their potential career choices and possible pathways into these, in their Industry & Enterprise classes.
Last week we had a detailed information session looking at VCE/VCAL and VET. Students asked great questions and most walked away with material to support their decision making (a pre-selection sheet and VCAA handbook). This week the Domains have made presentations to each of the I and E classes detailing the subjects they offer – what is studied in them, what they lead to and any pre-requisites they have.
While the 2022 subject selection books will not be available until the start of next term there are a range of resources available to assist students. The college careers web site www.gssccareers.com and specifically the link https://www.gssccareers.com/custom-page/1 have all kinds of resources for students and their parents - last years subject handbooks (GSSC & GOTAFE VET), sample subject selection sheet, VCE subject pre-requisite tools for University courses, VTAC & University guides for Year 10’s as well as tools to link favourite subjects to potential career choices.
WEDNESDAY 14 JULY
In the first week of Term 3 students will receive their subject selection packs (which will include their course handbook and selection sheet) in class. That evening (COVID permitting) parents will be invited to attend a Year 10 Parent information night at the Wanganui campus.
The event will commence at 6pm in the Senior Learning Centre, as well as adjacent classrooms. We plan to conduct simultaneous sessions in English (Senior Learning Centre) and also Arabic, Persian/Darhi, Somoan and Swaheli with interpreters in adjacent classrooms.
An explanation of VCE, VCAL, SBAT and VET and what they mean to you will be delivered. It will be a great opportunity to have all your questions answered. We will have representatives from GOTAFE and one of the apprenticeship centres present. They’ll be able to answer questions parents may have about VET and SBAT’s respectively. Should COVID restrictions intervene we may need to run this session online.
WEDNESDAY 21 JULY & THURSDAY 22 JULY
Subject selection interview sessions will be available for parents and their Year 10 students. Appointments will be available during the day and evening to ensure access for all families. At these appointments parents and their students will be able to ask questions and clarify things before committing their 2022 subject preferences.
On these two days Year 10’s will be remote learning so that they are available to attend an appointment for their interview at the time of their parent/guardian’s preference.
In the coming weeks we will announce via Compass when you will be able to pre-book these appointments via Compass (or by contacting the Wanganui office). Again, should COVID restrictions intervene we may need to run these interview sessions online.

Focus on Agriculture
AGRICULTURE ISN'T JUST FARMING!
It is focussed on “the entire food chain, managing the environment and minimising the impact of human endeavours on natural resources”. About 50% of all jobs in the agriculture industry are in capital cities. These jobs include environmental management, research, development, agribusiness and education. Most people in agriculture work full time.
The demand for agricultural science graduates grew strongly over the past five years and around 5000 job openings will be available by 2024, https://bit.ly/2HZWFel There is also an ongoing demand for agricultural science graduates with economics and management training.
EXPERTS ARE NEEDED IN THE AREAS OF:
Sustainable farming practices
Land management
Land conservation
Climate change practices
Food security
Agricultural research and policymaking
Students can specialise in areas such as:
Economics
Marketing
Animal and plant biotechnology
Catchment management
Climate change impacts
Crop management and production
Plant and soil science
Nutrition and feed production
Sustainable production and consumption
Water management
Technology is advancing rapidly in agriculture and students are advised to study maths, sciences and business at school. Students who don’t want to work ‘on the land’ have many opportunities to work in cities and in offices.
