Dance Showcase

Excerpt from Town Talk, Shepparton news, June 15

Thank you to Mrs Jill Muir for the following excerpt from Town Talk which appeared in the Shepparton News, on June 15.

**********

Towards the end of last month, I had the pleasure of attending a Dance Showcase, presented by the Greater Shepparton Secondary College. As a mother and grandmother, I have attended many school musicals – some of which were extraordinarily good – but I never expected to see a school, any school, offer an evening of contemporary and traditional dance - and ballet.

I went to see my grand-daughter, whose grace and beauty brought tears to my eyes, but I saw so much more; almost one hundred young people, braver than they knew, demonstrating poise and grace, standing tall despite an error or two, learning to trust themselves and the other cast members and developing teamwork. (I’ve always believed that there is as much teamwork necessary on stage as there is on a football field.) I saw a ‘welcome dance’ from the Marrung Dance Group and a fun-filled performance by the Punjabi Cultural Dance team.

There were six, self- choreographed solos from Year 12 students and I found Harry’s performance entitled ‘Crystalize’ outstanding. However, having said that, they were all very good. There was a variety of student performances from Years 7 to 12, including 7 short pieces choreographed by the Australian Ballet based on Romeo & Juliet - and class pieces on a Global Issues theme.

At the end of the performance, I watched the students emerge from the dressing room and I saw pride, and a sense of achievement ‘writ large’ on so many young faces. My congratulations to Kyla McGregor, Kerry Cameron and G.S.S.C. Surely the range of electives, now on offer, must mean every student can choose a subject which will make their heart sing, (or dance) – and school a much more enticing destination.
