VCAL Project

Last year our 2020 VCAL students started a project to build a special ANZAC bench seat. Sadly their efforts were interrupted by COVID-19. Our 2021 VCAL students took up the task. Congratulations to all on a great effort!

Some students in Mr Bristol’s Personal Development class started working on an ANZAC bench seat in 2020.  Ashley Bryant, Bridie Donnellan and Dylan Charles were really moving it along well, then COVID and Remote Learning happened and caused the project to go on hold. Unfortunately, time didn’t allow for the seat to be completed by the end of 2020. 

We were made aware of the opportunity to go on with the seat and complete it. The seat was half finished, which benefitted us, as it gave us time to be ready for the 2021 ANZAC day ceremony. 

We decided to take the project on as a Personal Development Skills project working in Mr Bristol’s class.

At first we thought that the seat would only need a few more screws, nuts and washers to get it finished, along with some sanding to make the surface nice and smooth, for the comfort of pupils sitting on the seat. 

We purchased some merbau timber for the seat, changed the lean on the back, did a bit more welding, spray painting, attached the merbau and added a few coats of decking oil. 

The seat was finished in time for it to be displayed in the courtyard near the Aleppo Pine tree for our 2021 Anzac Day commemoration. 

We trust that the seat will be moved to the new school site and included in the design area where an Aleppo Pine tree and plaque will be located.

The project didn’t take as much time as we thought it would, but I’m pleased that we went on to see it through. It’s nice to sit back and see that others will reflect upon the “Anzac Spirit” for years to come at the Greater Shepparton Secondary College!
