World Challenge

By the time this newsletter goes out there will be 19 days until the Year 10 and 11 World Challenge girls leave for their expedition to Vietnam and Cambodia. Where has that time gone?

Last week we had team sessions around 'Destination Research'. By the end of the session the teams were able to:

  • Understand where to research destination information
  • Have a plan for who will research what elements and by when
  • Establish what the team knows about the destination (s) so far
  • Understand the differences in culture
  • Know basic political and religious background to their expedition destination
  • Have basic knowledge of the currency and language in use.

We looked at Language, Culture, History and Environment. The girls used their laptop and books, such as Lonely Planet, to research both Cambodia and Vietnam. They then chatted within their group sharing what they had researched. The girls will need to understand the general background to countries they will visit. This will allow them to travel responsibly and to act appropriately, dependent on the local customs, culture and political or religious sensitivities.

In the weeks to come we will chat about 'Tips for Responsible Volunteers'……'Be a responsible traveller'. We will also look at our Community Project in more detail.

At community needs analysis meetings in 2019, poor housing and sanitation conditions for thirty families were identified as the two most pressing issues that the community was facing. During onsite inspection, Vinh Long Red Cross had pinpointed two families that need urgent assistance.. Criteria applied including:

  1. Income and livelihood of family
  2. Health and physical capacity of family
  3. Housing location in flood-danger area.

We have attached the information about the family we will be assisting through the community project.

We wish the following girls well on their expedition: Jennifer Afferi, Aimee Drinan, Jasmine Young, Chloe Davutovic, Erinn Kelso, Elise Ralph, Chloe Fong Lip, Sage Worland, Tilly Perrett, Brianna Horvatincic, Paris Pym, Sommer Dew, Sam Bortoli, Lilli Griffin, Phoebe Standfield, Charlie Thomas, Ciara Mansbridge, Madi McCahon, Charlotte Pulbrook, Keely Ortland, Mia Clohesy, Caitlyn Whitelaw, Lily Lilburne, Kate Lowe, Josie Rees, Annabel Gorman and  Monika Galovic.
