Year 10 EAL
MCG Visit
During term 1, the Year 10 EAL class undertook a research project, learning about the history of Australian Rules football, the current teams and some current players. Each week, the students are keeping up-to-date with score results and have been learning the rules of the game.
This culminated on May 19th with an excursion. First off, the class visited the AIA Centre, the home of the Collingwood Football Club. They watched the players train – a great way to get up close to the skill, speed and tactics of the game. At the end of the session, the students met USA-born Collingwood player Mason Cox; at the age of these students, he too had never seen the game before. He was good enough to chat and take some photos with the group – yes he is really that tall!
The group then made their way to the MCG, where a tour guide showed the students around the whole stadium. From down below the ground in the player change rooms, right up to the top level of the Members’ stand, the history of the ground and some of the important sporting events that have been held there were explained in detail by the guide.
Following the tour, the students then spent some time kicking footballs, shooting netballs and testing their reflexes in the Sports Museum of Australia.
It was a fantastic opportunity for these students to get a deeper insight into the history of sport in Australia and particularly, the prominence of Australian Rules football here in Melbourne.
