Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

Yes, we are just wild about reading!

So much so that we can congratulate these wonderful readers who are the first to have completed the challenge.

Zoe H             3/4M

Charlie S       3/4M

Chloe L          1/2F

Harper S       1/2C

Isla O             1/2C

Just reminder that the Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September 2023.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’  30 books with their parents and teachers.

Children from Year 3 to Year 6 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklist and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge

Fun with Literacy @Home

Language is a superbly rich resource: not only for reading, writing and speaking but also for playing games.

Good news – these words games need little or no equipment and are free to play anywhere anytime.

Here are a couple to try this fortnight!

GAME 1:     acrostics

Any number of players

Letters game

J Played by writing or speaking

Played with pencils and paper if writing, else no equipment if by speaking

OBJECTIVE: To come up with a word, then create a phrase using each of the letters in the word.

PROCEDURE: Players choose or are given a word or name.

Then they try to find words or make a sentence or phrase using words which start with the letter in the given word or name.

EXAMPLE:

We celebrate Mother’s Day this week, so maybe an acrostic for MOTHER. You can also draw beautiful pictures to go with your acrostics.

You might also like to try:

  • Mum
  • Mummy
  • Or your mum’s name?

GAME 2:     Family Word Search

Keeping with the family theme… Maybe try this Family Word Search!
