MENTAL COMPUTATION STRATEGIES

A big focus of our Numeracy teaching throughout the year is developing efficient mental computation strategies with our students. Research shows that over 80% of maths completed in our day-to-day lives is done mentally or 'in our head'.

Having automatic recall of our doubles and using this to solve near-double equations is a skill that we practise throughout the junior years. Below is a video that was used during remote learning, that explains a game to help the juniors to improve their recall of their doubles.

MATHS EXPLORER

This year all of our Grade 3 and 4 students are participating in a program called Maths Explorer. The Explorer program focuses on problem-solving and collaboration skills. The students in the grade ¾ classes work in small groups to solve a range of problems during their Wednesday maths sessions.

They focus on four main problem-solving strategies:

  • Draw a diagram
  • Using concrete materials
  • Find a pattern
  • Guess, check and refine

Some example questions are:
