Foundation (Prep)

Treasure Bag

In Prep C, many of the students enjoy sharing Show and Tell and look forward to it each week. In Term 2, Show and Tell transforms and becomes Treasure Bag. Each afternoon, I will offer the Treasure Bag to a student to take home and fill it with 3 treasures that they would like to share with the class. Only one student shares each day and therefore the children will learn to take turns and wait for another turn after everyone has presented their bag.

It is student choice as to what to share with the class but you are welcome to help them find something interesting to talk about to make their little presentation engaging. For example, a favourite book, photo, souvenir, etc.

Literacy

The two main focus areas in reading this term will be 'visualisation', encouraging students to make pictures in their mind when reading, and 'asking and answering questions' about the text. These strategies are introduced to young readers to develop comprehension skills and a deeper understanding of the text.

In writing, the children will continue to have regular handwriting lessons and opportunities for free choice writing. Students will also be introduced to descriptive writing and a very simple introduction to a persuasive style.

This term, each student will also continue to focus on their personal goals, practising letter identification, sight words and individual reading.

Numeracy

Term 2 will include units on both addition and subtraction. The children will be using hands-on materials, number stories and ten-frames to demonstrate their understanding.

Students will be introduced to telling time and look closely at the features of a clock. We will investigate chance and introduce vocabulary such as likely, unlikely, possible and impossible to discuss the likelihood of an event happening.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic for this term is Staying Alive! In this unit the children will learn about the many things they can do to stay healthy, how the body works and how we change as we get older. We will also learn about our 5 senses and discover the important role they play in our daily lives.
