On Tuesday May 17th Wantirna College hosted a celebration for IDAHOBIT Day.

International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) celebrates LGBTQIA+ people globally, and raises awareness for the work still needed to combat discrimination.

It was a great success, with staff and students gathering in the Student Wellbeing Centre to make a rainbow coloured bracelet or create a badge. Many wore something rainbow for the day to show their support .

After two years of not being able to run many onsite events due to covid 19 lockdowns, it was so great to see the LGBTIQA+ alliance group of students really step up. They planned, organised and ran a wonderfully creative and friendly event that was enjoyed by all.

Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia can occur online, face to face and affect everyone by creating spaces where people feel unsafe and like they can't be themselves.

Sexuality and gender identity or intersex status aren't always visible, so creating a culture where everyone feels safe, even if there aren't any visible LGBTIQA+ people is even more important.

I would like to acknowledge the support of Giuseppe, Jamie and the Wellbeing team for their ongoing support of our Wantirna College LGBTIQA+ Alliance group.
