Volleyball

What better way to start the term than with Volleyball last Friday!

Wantirna took a girl’s and a boys’ team out to compete and compete they did! The girls had 2 big games against Upwey and Boronia and despite losing them both they had a really fun day, made some new friends from other classes, and worked well as a team.  Learning and teaching each other new skills throughout the day.

The boys were in a slightly bigger pool and in their round matches played against two competitive sides, Upwey and Boronia. Winning all three games, the boys progressed onto must-win games in the finals where they defeated a tough Rowville West side 2-0 and secured their spot in the Grand Final against Rowville Sports Academy.

Pumped and raring, the boys were prepared to play their best, which they did in the first set, winning 25-22. Rowville weren’t going to let us win easily and put up a fight in the second set but after a few key plays they ended up winning the second set 25-27.

It was all down to the final set, first to 15 points wins out of two teams who had had massive days and were keen for victory. It had been neck and neck all game and unfortunately Wantirna fell at the final hurdle losing the last set 15-13.

Overall, both teams played fantastic volleyball with pure grit and determination. They held their heads high despite a gut wrenching loss. Both myself and Mr Beovich were super proud of all players for a great day and for conducting themselves the way they did.  We would like to thank Olympic Volleyballer, Kelly Lean for coming out and running a few training sessions. Her knowledge and skill was extremely appreciated and assisted in our volleyball efforts.

Boys AFL

Another awesome day out with the Year 7 crew!

On a day forecasted for showers, team spirits were high as we played 3 games for the day against Upwey, Rowville West and Rowville Sports Academy.

We won games 1 and 2 against Upwey and Rowville West convincingly (48-1 and 101-14 respectively) and the team was up for the challenge that was Rowville Sports Academy.

After smashing teams by 100+ points all day, our ferocious boys kept Rowville to just 80 points, kicking the first goal of the day against them as well.

Despite not coming home with the win, the boys all had a great day out and worked really well as a team, impressing both Ms Thomson, myself and even the umpires who commented by saying ‘Wantirna’s Got Talent!’. Farell’s response of ‘Yeah we do!’ is exactly right and we are excited for what’s in store for this young squad.

Massive thanks to our student coaches, Ashton and John who did an awesome job running trainings, helping with team selection and managing game day practices efficiently.

Tennis

Mr Hoogkamer and his team of Year 7’s had heaps of fun out on the courts at tennis! Wantirna had two teams competing with both of those teams playing Boronia and Rowville Sports Academy as well as the big Wantirna v Wantirna game. Unfortunately once again a demanding Rowville side beat us to the punch but all the kids enjoyed their day out and showed some promising skills going into the older year levels.
