Zoo Excursion

The Foundation students had a fantastic time at our excursion last Friday. The children participated in the 'Wild Explorers' program that was facilitated by Zoo Educators. During this time, the students got to investigate different areas which included animal life cycles, different characteristics of animals and building different types of habitats. Alicia, our Zoo Educator, introduced us to a star tortoise who was 8 years old. During this time, the children got to explore the tortoise's physical features and learned that star tortoises live between 25-30 years, they like to eat carrots, leaves and grass through their beaks, and that the star pattern on their shells help them camouflage in the wild.

We enjoyed a picnic lunch together at the Carousel Park before heading off in our groups. Individually, the students selected preferences as to which animals they would like to learn more about during our visit. Smaller groups were formed based on these preferences to ensure the students could learn about their chosen animal. Prior to going on the excursion, the students developed questions that they wanted to discover about their chosen animal whilst at the Zoo. As we walked around and explored the animals, the children were able to research and make discoveries that were relevant to their questions. During the week, the students will be completing an 'Information Report' during writing lessons based on their chosen animal and by using the information collected from our visit to the Zoo.
