Year 5/6 News

Welcome

As we draw towards the end of the term and reflect on the learning that has taken place it is certainly very clear that it has been a busy time. The Urban Camp is an obvious highlight as well as the Parliament House excursion and the rich learning that not only took place at the time but also subsequently back at school.

Reconciliation Week was also a highlight where we enjoyed a number of learning experiences including the performance from the Yarrabah Cultural Dancers. It was also wonderful to see our Fire Carrier team at this performance being a key part of the occasion.  It is great to see these students making the most of their opportunities in being leaders of the school community.

We thank all the 5/6 families for their continued support this term and wish everyone a safe and enjoyable time with their loved ones over the holidays.

Problem Based Learning

This fortnight in PBL, students have made up their own laws and researched what it would take to get it passed. They have had to work out what level of government this would be taken to and how the law would be enforced. One student wanted to change the legal age to ride a quadbike, other students wanted three day weekends. One student even suggested that teachers get paid more money. Students reflected on their camp experience and wrote persuasive texts on why we should go to camp or why we should go to The Old Melbourne Gaol. The trip to parliament house helped to cement their understanding of the political system we have in Australia. Students were able to make connections to this when we watched famous parliament speeches for the next part of the unit.

RE/Wellbeing

For the last fortnight in Wellbeing students have looked at gender expectations. Students investigated why traditional men's and women's roles in society are outdated and may limit career opportunities. Students looked at why men and women can take whatever career path appeals to them. Students looked at the benefits of positive female role models in jobs such as the medical profession and defence.

As part of our focus in Religion, we have explored how we can use prayer as a time to reflect and connect with God. As we begin our mornings connecting through prayer, students have continued to lead and be inspired by Scripture and prayer. Each morning, selected students guide our session, preparing our reflective gathering spaces. Through these sessions, we have explored both traditional and contemporary prayers, songs, and Christian meditation.
