Gandhi, Plato, Martin Luther King, Einstein and Reverend Tim Costello and living ethically in a post-truth political realm ... and the need for hope.
Tim Costello’s Justice in Action 2019 Gandhi Oration was presented by The Reverend Tim Costello at The Roundhouse last Wednesday night. The evening was dedicated to acknowledging the reality of national and global social injustices, past and present, was opened by Dr Peter McKenzie, an elder of the La Perouse Indigenous Community.
Rev Costello asserted the need for all of us to share our common humanity. He cited global and national issues of injustice, the essence of which was poverty, not just material poverty but poverty that is a lack of dignity. He explored how complacency leads to indifference which then leads to neglect. He asserted that the ONLY solution is LOVE: as when we LOVE we will care enough to make change in the way that we perceive others. He asserted that the cause of injustice is the apathy of the Everyman and that whilst there are evil-doers who cause great injustice, the majority of social injustice is sourced in good people being apathetic; apathy caused by choosing to be unaware, thinking that the problems around us are too enormous and that we are helpless to change anything, or that we simply don’t care enough to see and act.
Rev Costello reflected on how the Close the Gap initiatives for Indigenous Australians have not worked because of the society’s apathy. He identified that one in five Australian children are living below the poverty line, experiencing inequality in housing, health and education.
His proposed solution - in respect of Gandhi - was a quote from Gandhi that we should “nourish hope within ourselves so that we can impart this hope to others”.
It was a wonderful night that made us reflect on our decisions.
