Social Justice

Congratulations Year 8:  Cancer touches the lives of many in our community each year and the College can be proud of their significant contribution to the efforts of the Cancer Council. The Daffodil Day collection is an annual involvement which extends the College’s social justice efforts into the community. Approximately 60 of our Year 8 students spent the morning assisting the Cancer Council by collecting and selling merchandise for Daffodil Day. The sale of merchandise supporting the Cancer Council raises much needed funds to fight this disease through research.

THE EDMUND RICE SOCIETY

The Edmund Rice Society members have been very busy and have a lot to be proud of.

  • The Fair Trade Chocolate Stall for Callan Services in Papua New Guinea is run by the Junior members of the Edmund Rice Society. The Junior Society members have been running their stall on Friday lunchtimes for Terms 2 and 3.  At the end of this term they will be sending all monies raised to Callan Services and in Term 4 we will be linking up with them via Skype.
  • The Skateboards for The Haven Project continues with Edmund Rice Society members on Tuesday afternoons after school. This project has now extended to the Junior members who are pitching in to prepare and pack the skateboard trucks and wheels to go with the skateboard decks the Senior members have been making.  A special thanks for this project goes to Mr Gibson for allowing the Society to use his TAS workshops to complete this social justice initiative which is of great benefit to one of our partner schools at The Haven Terrigal, an EREA Annex school.
  • The Edmund Rice Society has had three Society leaders in 2017 - James Spencer, Jack Moran and Daniel Hall. The Society as a group are both very proud and pleased to see all three of our leaders obtain student leadership positions for 2018. Congratulations to Daniel who will be our next College Captain, Jack who will be a Vice-Captain and James who will be a Prefect. At Tuesday's College Assembly James spoke to the students and staff about the role social justice plays in the life of the College and The Edmund Rice Society, and how both have helped him develop and nurture his social conscience from Year 5 to present.

We are excited to announce that The White Knight Foundation will host the third annual Walk Against Youth Violence on Sunday 24th September 2017.  In 2017 we are hoping to have over 250 walkers join us on the 10km Spit to Manly walk with a meeting time of 8:00am for an 8:30am start. Make sure you share this invitation with your family and friends to get them out on what will be an awesome Sunday morning! The walk will finish at Manly Wharf at approximately 10:00am with a free BBQ for all walkers. There will be a short presentation following the walk so make sure to stay around.

WHAT TO KNOW

In 2016 the Foundation managed to raise over $10,000 to assist young victims of crime along with raising awareness on the issue of youth violence and the devastating impacts it leaves. We are aiming to match and beat this goal of funds raised to continue supporting young victims in our communities. Remember, the person who raises the most money through GoFundraise over $3000 will win a Nintendo Switch! Make sure you share GoFundraise pages through your social media.  Looking forward to seeing you all on the day!
