Message from the Principal

Welcome Assembly

The 2020 school year has started strongly with students settling confidently into their studies and routines. At the recent College assembly 2019 College Dux, Kiana Rodriguez delivered an inspiring speech outlining  what her experience has taught her about what it takes to be successful. She gave students three pieces of advice: that success is different for every person, so set your goals high but within sight; that mistakes and failures are inevitable - don't worry, we all make them - fix them if you can or make amends and learn from them; and finally that we should always believe in ourselves regardless of where our journey leads us. Senior School Captains, Kiara Churchman, Dominique Jones, Jean Tafa and Noah Collins spoke eloquently about the College STARR Value, Respect and the need to keep it front of mind when we welcome new students into our College and work with others to achieve our best throughout the school year.

Student Use of Mobile Phones

This year all government schools have brought in a new policy regarding student use of Mobile Phones. It has been wonderful to see students and parents supporting this policy so strongly. There have been very few occasions when students have had to be reminded about the policy and an extremely high level of cooperation where it has been forgotten. Thank you also to parents and carers for using the College phone number and not student mobile phone numbers if students need to be contacted during the school day.

Scholarship Success

Congratulations to the following students from the class of 2019 who have been successful in securing substantial scholarships to support their tertiary education. Each of these prestigious scholarships provides students with financial support throughout their tertiary studies, as well as a network of contacts in their chosen field of studies.

  • Azaam Ebrahim was awarded the Daffyd Lewis Scholarship.
  • Betelihem Hamsalu, Tahlia Crees and Akuol Akot were each awarded the Mary Jane Lewis Scholarship.
  • Ajak Peter was awarded the inaugural Department of Treasury and Finance Diversity Scholarship.

A large number of other scholarships were awarded to MSC students and we have been informed that this year Melton Secondary College has broken the record for the number of scholarships received by its students!

A big thank you to Maria Hassan and the rest of the wonderful Careers Team. The support which they provided students with scholarship applications has been amazing. Congratulations to the scholarship recipients for putting themselves forward so confidently and displaying our College STARR Values so well.

School Review

This year Melton Secondary College will undertake its School Review. The Department of Education and Training conducts an independent review of all government schools every four years. Over the coming weeks students, parents/carers and staff will be invited to share their thoughts about what is going well and where improvements can be made in College programs. Further information will be provided in the coming week about how you can make a contribution to the review if you wish to do so.

School Council Elections

Later in this edition you will find details about the annual School Council elections. Being a school review year, school councillors have the opportunity to have input into the new School Strategic Plan which will set the direction for the College over the next four years.

Melton Secondary College school council has 17 members: six parents, four community (including 2 School Captains), four staff, two elected students and the Principal.

If you are interested in joining council and have questions about what this might involve, please contact myself, or Virginia Mitchell (Executive Assistant) at the College on 9743 3322.

Protect - Child Safe

The College has a responsibility under the Child Safe legislation to provide a safe environment for students. We take this responsibility extremely seriously. Teachers also have a legal duty to take action where they believe there is evidence that a child is being abused. Please follow this link for further information and details about Child Safe and how to get direct assistance if you believe that a young person is at risk.
