From the Head of Sport

We have almost reached the halfway point of what has been a chaotic but enjoyable term for our students. The need for everyone to take care of themselves has never been higher than right now as our commitments to a range of activities at the college build up. This Saturday we face our busiest weekend of sport with the culmination of the basketball and tennis competitions in our first ever “FINALS” weekend along with trials against St. Laurence’s. Every team is in their own style of play-off game so will all be playing a grand final to determine their final placing. This is an exciting way to wrap up the season and we wish every team the best of luck!

SATURDAY, AUGUST 8 - BIGGEST DAY OF SPORT FOR THE YEAR!

As mentioned, this Saturday will conclude the basketball and tennis seasons. In a shortened season it is has been fantastic that our boys have had the opportunity to play sport and now they have the chance to play in our first ever AIC “FINALS” weekend. In particular, we congratulate our tennis program who have 11 of our 17 teams playing in the major Grand final match and four other teams playing off for 3rd place. This is a great reflection of the development of the MCA tennis program in such a short time. There are also seven basketball teams in the GF and we wish all of these team the very best!!

RUGBY / FOOTBALL TRIAL v SLC (LOTS OF LATE GAMES)

The draws have been completed for Saturday and it was inevitable that due to the basketball and tennis finals, it would be a challenge to plan this day and please everyone.

While we have worked hard to avoid as many clashes as we can, there may be some games where students will miss the trials for rugby & football. Basketball and tennis finals are obviously the priority so please see your coaches if you have any concerns.

There are matches being played from 7:30am until 5:00pm so please check the schedule carefully. This weekend your games will most likely not be at their usual time! Many games will be in time slots that are a “one-off” to give boys the chance to play sport and this will not be the usual schedule once the season starts.

SPECTATOR INFORMATION

The AIC management committee has decided to relax restrictions on spectators for the upcoming rugby and football seasons commencing this week. As we had always planned for the busy rugby & football seasons, we will now introduce the EVA check-in process utilised by sporting clubs via your phone.

IMPORTANT CHECK-IN INFORMATION

Please see below:

  • There will be SPECTATORS ALLOWED to attend Cross Country. The program will still be split into two. SPC will send out maps including a COVID SITE plan that will now include entry and exit points for spectators to code in.
  • Spectators for rugby and football will be as follows: 2 parents per family allowed, maintaining the “get in-get out” policy for all games. FIRST MATCHES WILL HAVE ADDITIONAL STUDENT-SPECTATORS ALLOWED WHICH WILL BE CAPPED AT 100.
  • No parents will be allowed at Chess as it is considered a classroom only activity

AIC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12

In a season full of team-sport clashes it can be easy to forget that our 3-time champion cross-country team have also been preparing for their championships. With no opportunities to race due to COVID restrictions on competitions our boys will be eager to compete and see the results of their hard work come to fruition. As usual, it will always be a big challenge but the boys will undoubtedly do their best for their College.

Congratulations to Harry Hunter who was named team captain for 2020 along with Jordan Chugg and Tyler Boreham who were named as team vice-captains. Harry spoke very well on assembly as he presented his Open team to the College. Good luck to all of our runners and particularly our Seniors who will represent the College for the last time.

HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Another fantastic day of track and field was held last Wednesday with the House Athletics carnival taking place. With some great performances across the day the team will be strong once again this year as they look to defend their title for the 6th time in a row. A highlight of the day was not just the performance of our athletes but the willingness of students to get involved and to assist at events. This was led by our House Sport captains who took an active role in running events with the “skeleton staff” we had on the day.

Congratulations to the following students who were awarded won Age Champions for the House Athletics Carnival and were presented on assembly.
