Volunteer Tutor Program

In association with the Education Faculty of Monash University, Wheelers Hill Secondary College runs a Tutoring Program staffed by future teachers currently completing their studies. The tutors give their time freely and work with students individually or in small groups. Two of our current tutors are Nadia Elkin and Maddi Padula.

Nadia is in her final year of a Bachelor Secondary Education (Honours)/Bachelor of Arts Double degree in Spanish, Linguistics and Literature. Nadia comes in once a week to work with a Year 11 student on improving her understanding of the play Macbeth. Maddi is in her first year of a double Arts degree. She was awarded a place in Top Arts last year (2019) and has worked professionally in musical theatre. Maddi is currently working with three of our Theatre Studies students.

We cannot thank them enough for their ongoing commitment to the program and the giving of their time and expertise to assist our students in being the best they can be.

Year 10 Tips: Choosing Your VCE Program  | Careers Coordinator

In Term 3, Year 10 students will be asked to make decisions about their VCE study program for years 11 and 12.  Choosing subjects and courses may be one of the first career decisions students make.  Over the next couple of weeks during Yr10 Futures classes, students will be working through the ‘I Plan’ program which will provide them with the steps they need to take in order to make these important decisions.

Making big decisions may be challenging and the questions they may want to ask themselves are:

  • What subjects do I want to study in Year 11 & 12 for the career I want?
  • Do I want to study VCE, VCAL or VET?
  • What training should I do? eg. a course at University, TAFE/private provider or an Australian Apprenticeship
  • What University, TAFE or private provider/college should I attend?
  • What job opportunities will it open up?
  • What apprenticeship are available and where could I learn more in order to make an informed decision as to which one to choose?

Year 11 & 12 subject choices are very important as many post school training courses and careers have mandatory entry requirements.  Although it’s important to choose the subjects necessary to be eligible for your desired career/course, it’s even more important to ensure that subjects chosen match your interests and strengths.  As students work through the ‘I Plan’ program they will be asked to think about what they want to do, where their interests lie and what career research they need to undertake in order to make informed subject/career choices. They will also be asked to draw on the Morrisby Profile and then finally update their Career Action Plan which will be required for their one to one Course Counselling interview in Term 3.

We wish all Year 10 students a positive experience with their decision making and as a school community we look forward to supporting their aspirations.
