What's Happening at OLA

Pre-Primary

In Pre-Primary, we have been looking at making personal connections to texts. When we connect with texts, we deepen our understanding of the characters and events in the story. In PPG, we are reading, Jack and the Beanstalk. We have been exploring characters’ feelings and connecting to those characters’ emotions. Here are some examples:

In PPM, we read the story, How Boring. This story was set on a rainy day so we made connections with what we like to do on rainy days. Here are some examples:

Last week, we commenced our Geography unit. We explored the world globe and discussed how Earth is a sphere we then compared this to a 2D map of the world. We refined our focus from the world – Earth, our country – Australia, our state – Western Australia and our suburb – Dianella. We can’t to further explore our place in the world.

Year 2

We are excited to announce two enhancements to our Literacy program. Year 2 iPads have the Reading A-Z app installed and we have all children reading at an individualised level. The use of Raz Kids in our reading program allows children to select from a variety of texts, listen with headphones, read on their own and then answer questions about the text.  We also have a large number of new texts available, recently purchased from the PM Reading Series. These are also used in our Literacy group rotations.

The children had a wonderful time preparing a gift and a card for Mothers’ Day. It was wonderful to have so many mums attend our whole school Mass last Friday.

Year 4

In Religion, our focus is First Holy Communion. We have been looking at how we know we belong to a Church community. We know that during Baptism, we have become a part of God’s family and now we begin our own spiritual journey to receive Jesus for the very first time in Holy Communion. It is a time for thought and reflection. A time of looking at different ways we can pray.  A time to be in communion with God. To celebrate our uniqueness and talents. To wonder at the miracle of the bread being transubstantiated into Jesus’ body. The wine a symbol of Jesus life blood. It takes many grains of wheat to make a loaf of bread, as it takes all of different kinds of people to make a church. We are learning our part in the church as we prepare for this sacred Sacrament.

In English, we are concentrating on sentence structure i.e. moving from simple sentences to compound sentences and adding more descriptive language to our narratives. Also, we are enjoying discovering new ways to say the same thing.

It has also been an exciting week for the students, as we have received our HP Pens. This enables students to write on their device, create sticky notes, draw on a whiteboard, and merge their analog thoughts with their digital device. Integrated into apps like Office and Microsoft Edge, students can draw on the web and annotate their documents digitally.

Year 6

Over the past three weeks, both Year 6 classes have been working and praying towards completing our Sacrament of Confirmation, which will take place this coming weekend. We were given an opportunity to create a poster of the Saint we chose as our Confirmation name. We have created an excellent array of various posters that are now displayed in Our Lady’s Assumption Church.

A highlight of this week was our ‘Retreat Day’. Carl and Gardenia, our instructors from Faith Impact, led us through a day of activities emphasising the teachings of the Sacrament of Confirmation. This Involved team building games which were engaging, fun, loud and exciting. We enjoyed the day with our friends, instructors and teachers. On Wednesday evening, our parents joined us for a Confirmation Parent-Child workshop in the Multipurpose Hall led by Father Ken and our teachers. They spoke to us about what is expected as a parent and candidate during our faith journey. We were given questions to reflect on, such as, why our parents chose our names when we were born and why they chose to have us Baptised?

We are all very excited and a little nervous about being confirmed this weekend, but we know we are ready and will enjoy the celebration with our family and friends.
