Grade 2 Home Learning Snapshot

Term 3 Week 9

Home Learning Updates

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 9. It's the last week of term before a well-deserved break.

This week Grade 2 teachers will be having our planning day on Thursday. There will be activities assigned for the students to complete and we will have a very quick morning Google Meet at 9am (instead of 9:15am) to do the roll and run through the day's activities.

On Friday will we have an end-of-term celebration over Google Meet during our 11:30am meet.

We would like to thank you for your ongoing support this term!

Writing

This week in narrative writing, children will be learning to build rich descriptions of characters. They will include not only the physical characteristics, but also the attitudes and attributes that a character may have.  Students will be using mind maps as a strategy to generate adjectives and ideas. Proper nouns will be revisited and synonyms will be introduced. They will also learn how to develop a character in their narratives.

We will end the week with writing a reflection about the term. They will describe their thoughts and feelings on various things that happened and what they learnt.

Reading

In reading, we will continue to focus our learning around fiction texts. Last week our focus was on the orientation of a story: characters and setting. This week the students will learn about the plot: the events that make up the story. The plot includes a complication and a resolution. The students will use a story mountain (pictured below) to help them think about the events in a story. The students can self select story books and may wish to base the activities around a chapter book that they are currently reading at home.

Some tips for developing fluency will also be included: 'reading like a storyteller' and 'warm up phrases'. These tips will help students develop phrasing and intonation/expression.

Word Study

This week we are continuing to bootcamp our rule about job 1 of Silent Final E. The silent final e jumps over the consonant to make the vowel say its second sound.

Maths

We will continue our focus on multiplication. This week’s learning intention is applying strategies to help solve multiplication. We will introduce a different strategy each day with a worksheet/s so they can practise applying the strategy. The whole class lessons will focus on this learning intention. Your child’s class teacher will continue with targeted small group Google Meets.

There is no formal Maths lesson planned for Thursday due to planning day. However, we strongly encourage students to practise learning their multiplication or division facts by playing Sunset Maths on Essential Assessment.

Unit of Inquiry

We are continuing with our choice board this week. Students have shared some ideas of their interests and we have added some new activities. One of these is a Recipe Padlet. We would like to encourage families to share a photo of a recipe that is important to your national or cultural background, or that represents your family history. Students will then be able to have a go at cooking their classmates' recipes.

Wellbeing

We continue to encourage students to take frequent breaks and take time for indoor and outdoor play.

We are continuing to focus on gratitude during our reflections. Some gratitude prompts are included on our daily schedule and we hope these might be useful in conversations at home. Your family might like to make time to read through the things students have said they are grateful for in their gratitude tree or jar.
