Term 3 Sport

Term 3 is normally one of the busiest terms in sport at Brentwood. As 2020 keeps interrupting normal programs, we have had to adapt to sport differently.

Students have been competing in Virtual events. The Race Around Victoria is not yet finished – maybe over the term break we may have a House return to Melbourne! Get outside and make the most of our 2 hours of physical activity. Go for a walk, run, jog, bike ride, skateboard with your family members and log your km via our compass newsfeed link.

Waratah leads the race on the way back to Melbourne! Congratulations!!

Waratah 2786.97 km – Just arrived at Metung

Wattle 1736.74 km – just arrived at Bundalong

Banksia 1004.57 km – finally arrived at Lindsay Point!

Jacaranda 845.27 km – are still travelling up the SA border.

School Sport Victoria put up virtual challenges for all students and staff to get involved in. Currently the Virtual Track and Field is in action and I would encourage you to have a go! Every Friday, students have had the opportunity to ask questions and listen to elite athletes and role models via the #AskSSV live streams. For more info and past shows click   - https://www.ssv.vic.edu.au/Pages/NEWSTheAskSSVShowEp22.aspx

Term 3 is normally our Interschool Athletics. Even though in 2020 we will not compete against our local schools, the efforts from our students in term 1 at our House carnival will not be forgotten. Friday March 12, 2021 is the time to shine again! It is the date of our 2021 House carnival, and it is only 25 weeks away! Stay motivated amazing athletes!

The Australian Olympic Change-Maker program recognises and rewards students who are demonstrating the Olympic spirit through leadership and driving positive change in their communities. This award has now replaced the Pierre de Coubertin.

Lili Cavanagh has been nominated to receive this award in 2020. Congratulations Lili!

Lili attended the Virtual Summit that was hosted by Olympic Champion, Brooke Hanson OAM, Gold & Silver medallist and one of Australia’s most loved swimming personalities. The Summit celebrated each young leader nominated for this year’s Award and featured many Olympians as they delved into discussion about leadership, being a positive force and overcoming challenges in creating change as well as gaining a firsthand insight in our athletes’ preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Speakers included:

  • Brooke Hanson OAM, Swimming, Gold and Silver Medallist, Athens 2004
  • Melissa Wu, Diving - Silver Medallist, Rio 2016, London 2012, Beijing 2008
  • Steven Solomon, Athletics - London 2012
  • Chloe Dalton, Rugby - Gold Medallist, Rio 2016
  • Beki Smith, Athletics - London 2012
  • Kyle Vander-Kuyp, Athletics - Sydney 2000, Atlanta 1996
  • Taliqua Clancy, Beach Volleyball - Rio 2016

So what’s on in term 4?

SSV have cancelled all region and state events for the remainder of 2020. This has had a flow on effect, and there will be no Monash Division sports days in term 4. Whilst we are saddened by the decision, the health and safety of our students, staff and community are vital and we must adhere to the advice handed down by the Department of Education and Chief Health Officer of Victoria.

For all cancelled excursions that families have made payments for, credits will be processed to student accounts for future use.

I hope that 2021 will be our year to continue to be proud of our school and be the best Brentwood team member we can be!

Enjoy the break and stay active!
