Exciting Term 2 in the Library

The library has started this year off with a bang, making the most of our new space and welcoming all students with enthusiasm. Lunch and recess times are proving very popular, and although we are still operating with capacity limits, it is so exciting to see students coming in to play board games, read, catch up on homework, or just hang out with friends. We are also welcoming classes in for our Wide Reading program – it has been wonderful to be able to discuss reading with so many students, and to help them find the perfect book for them. Our Teacher Librarian team have also been running workshops to support other classes, introducing our Year 9s to the magazine collection, demonstrating to Year 11s how to access our news and current events databases, and showing Year 10 Business classes how to navigate the same resources. We have also hosted illustrator and artist Sue DeGennaro, who introduced our Year 7s to the intriguing world of front cover design.

The new library spaces have also proven to be the perfect meeting place for a range of student clubs and groups. The library Reading Room now plays host to Knitting Club, Dungeons and Dragons, Coding Club, student magazine Ubique, Creative Writing Club, the LGBTQIA+ Student Advocacy Group, Book Club, and Library Committee. Hosted by one of our Teacher Librarians, Book Club meets on a fortnightly basis and focuses on a different theme each meeting. Our next theme is Post-Apocalyptic fiction, which we will be chatting about on March 15th. For some ideas of what to read, stop by the library to check out our book display! The Library Committee is also always happy to welcome new members. Already this year, they have organised displays to celebrate Aromantic Awareness Week and World Wildlife Day. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next!

If you’re looking for something new to read, never fear: we are getting new titles delivered all the time. Some of the interesting offerings include Bad Girls Never Say Die by Jennifer Mathieu, a feminist retelling of SE Hinton’s The Outsiders. Things to Do Before the End of the World by Emily Barr is a thriller set in the months before the world runs out of air. The main character is contacted by a long lost cousin who wants to meet up before the world ends – but maybe she isn’t what she seems. Our third recommendation is the new offering from Phil Stamper, Golden Boys. This is contemporary fiction about a group of friends who have been brought together by all being LGBTQIA+ in a small town. When they all go after their dreams and spend time apart for the first time, they each get the chance to figure out who they really are.

We are so happy to welcome all students into the library this term, and our Teacher Librarian team are ready and waiting to help you find something to read.
