WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC?

Remembrance Day 2021

Thank you to our College Captains Maya S and Jason S for partaking in a very important duty, along with our Principal Mrs Wright and Mr Raidme, at the Remembrance Day ceremony held at Point Danger. We would also like to commend all staff and students at our College for taking time to pause, reflect and honour our heroes during a minutes silence on the 11th Day, of the 11th month, at the 11th hour.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them."

~ Lest we forget.

Surf Coast Shire Youth Forum

On Friday 12 November, selected students participated in the Surf Coast Shire Online Youth Forum run by Youth Gurus. These workshops are designed to engage students in developing a theory of change to some of the biggest issues being raised throughout our Youth Census.

We will present back what we have learnt from the Youth Census, ask students to explore the issues, identify actions and resourcing required to address them, articulate the outcome that this would deliver and how this may be tracked and evaluated.

Coastal Environment Centre (CEC)

Recently we welcomed some young Spiny Leaf Insects into a specially created enclosure in the CEC.  They’re native to the coastal forests of NSW and QLD so the enclosure needs to have a heating pad to keep it around 18-26°C. They are easy to feed because they are herbivores and prefer to eat eucalyptus and acacia leaves which we have growing around campus. The leaves get sprayed with distilled water to maintain the humidity and give the ‘stickies’ a drink.

These insects have terrific camouflage and spend most of their day hanging from the branches and swaying to look like leaves in the breeze.

Because they have a hard exoskeleton rather than bones inside their bodies, when they grow then need to moult the restrictive exoskeleton. One was captured moulting a few nights ago (as pictured).

If students would like to pick up the stickies during their class in the CEC they should ask permission from the teacher at an appropriate time such as during a brain break. Gently encourage the sticky to walk onto your fingers, they are very delicate so don’t grab at them. They will happily hang upside down on your fingers but be aware that they can move pretty quick when they want to! Also make sure you close the enclosure lid with no gaps because we have found them to be escape artists!

School for Student Leadership

Congratulations to Kirsten M, Toby K-B and Daniel H who are spending the last 5 weeks of Term 4 at the School For Student Leadership campus at Dinner Plain. The School for Student Leadership is a residential program designed to bring students from around the state to live and learn as a community for the duration of their stay. While away, they will spend time in the Alpine Environment learning about the unique ecology of the high country as well as undertaking ‘expos’ hikes and campouts in the Alpine Region. The learning aspect of their experience focuses on skills from English, Maths, Science and Humanities bringing together these skills to develop a Community Learning Project that the students will implement when they return to school in Term 1 of 2022. At this stage Kirsten, Toby and Daniel are working toward a series of lunchtime concerts to raise awareness for youth mental health. During their time they will meet regularly with Megan Wyatt via Google Meet to discuss the organisation of their CLP well as regular email to check in on their wellbeing.
