New Norcia Excursion

On Friday, 2 June the Year 11 RE ATAR students from Trinity College embarked on an exciting excursion to New Norcia. The day started early as the group gathered at Trinity College and eagerly awaited the departure. At 7.15am, the buses were loaded, and the journey began.

After a pleasant drive, the students arrived at Bindoon Bakehaus around 8.30am. They had a brief stop to grab some refreshments and fuel up for the rest of the trip. By 9.00am, the group was back on the road, eagerly anticipating their arrival at New Norcia.

Around 9.45am, the students finally reached their destination - New Norcia. The first stop was the New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery, where the students embarked on a fascinating tour. They were immersed in the rich history and cultural heritage of the area. As part of the tour, the students were given an interesting worksheet to complete, encouraging them to engage with the exhibits and reflect on their learning.

Following the museum visit, the group gathered to meet their knowledgeable tour guide, who led them on an exploration of the town. They visited the old Boarding schools, St Gertrude's and St Ildephonsus', gaining insight into the lives of the students who once resided there. The tour also included a visit to the Flour Mill, where the students learned about the significance of agriculture in the region's history.

One of the highlights of the excursion was the visit to the Abbey Church, where the students had the opportunity to see the tomb of Dom Salvado, a prominent figure in the establishment of New Norcia. The architectural beauty and spiritual ambiance of the church left a lasting impression on the students.

Later, the group proceeded to the Monastery. They had the unique experience of joining the monks in prayer, creating a sense of serenity and reflection. The encounter with the monks provided an invaluable opportunity for the students to gain firsthand knowledge about monastic life and the Benedictine tradition.

After a fulfilling morning, it was time for lunch. The students gathered to enjoy a well-deserved meal as well as having the opportunity to kick the footy around.

Following lunch, the students had the privilege of meeting Abbott John, a respected figure in the monastic community of New Norcia. He graciously shared insights into monastic life and answered the students' questions, providing a deeper understanding of the Benedictine Monks' way of living.

As the day drew to a close, the students bid farewell to New Norcia and began their journey back to Trinity College. The excursion had been a memorable and enriching experience, broadening their understanding of religious and cultural heritage. The students returned with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore and learn from such a unique and historically significant place.
