INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM
SCHOOL MUSIC GROUP REPORTS
SEMESTER 1 2023
The Lee Street Band boasts a variety of instruments this year, with woodwind, brass and percussion sections all well represented.
In Term 1 we were excited to be able to perform again at the Lee St School Fete! We took listeners back to the 80s with our arrangement of glam metal hit The Final Countdown. It was such a fun piece to put together and the musicians worked hard towards a fantastic performance.
This term, we have rehearsed The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine to perform at the Winter Musical Soirée. The Band members learnt their parts relatively quickly, giving us plenty of time to focus on the balance between instruments and ensuring the tempo remains constant. The resulting performance at the soiree was very polished! Many congratulations to the players.

This year the Lee Street Choir have been working on voice technique to strengthen the rhythm, pitch and breathing of the ensemble. It has been wonderful to hear the ensemble sing together, each week becoming stronger and more cohesive. We have been learning songs such as Diamonds by Rihanna, Do Re Mi from the Sound Of Music, Raindrops by Suenito, My Island Home by The Warumpi Band and more. Students have learned movements to the words of the songs to help remember the lyrics and fully embody the song. I look forward to expanding the choir’s repertoire next term.

Members of the Junior Recorder Ensemble have had a lot of fun, working on playing together and listening, in order to keep good time. Initially, listening can be quite difficult to do, as in lessons each player is developing their listening skills, in order to listen to themselves whilst they play. Listening to others playing as well is a giant step more challenging. The results have been quite spectacularly great, as we played Shepherds Call and Hot Cross Buns at the Fete and Dum Dum Diddle Diddle and Yankee Doodle at the recent Winter Musical Soirée.

Junior Recorder Ensemble Conductor
The Senior Recorder Ensemble is comprised of a mix of different sized recorders; descant, treble, tenor and bass. Our music is complex, as often each part has its own rhythm. Learning to listen to each other whilst playing and counting has been a challenge. We recently played Gymnopedie No 1. and Hava Nagila at the Winter Musical Soirée. Earlier in the year we really enjoyed performing Spinning Top and Spinnin at the Fete.

The String Ensemble is made up of violin and guitar players. We've had some new members this year which has been great. During our rehearsals we work on playing together as a group focusing on timing and intonation. The students worked really hard in a short space of time to bring together a song called Only You by Yazoo. We played it at the recent Winter Musical Soirée and were very pleased with our performance. The ensemble provides a supportive and encouraging environment where the students can work together to create wonderful music.
