Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2023

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is open and we encourage families to register as a home based reader

https://vprc.eduweb.vic.gov.au/register

The PRC application offers a range of exciting features including:

  • access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
  • a modern user-friendly interface
  • rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
  • the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition, but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September 2023.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklist and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge

Happy Reading!

UNCLE RON VISITS

VALKSTONE PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Valkstone students were treated to a very special assembly on Monday morning to help us celebrate NAIDOC Week. Accomplished indigenous performer, Uncle Ron Murray regaled us with his many talents in this entertaining one hour presentation. He told us stories about the Dreamtime and about life growing up in his community. He played his didgeridoo and got the students up and dancing as they pretended to be different types of Australia’s native wildlife. Ron’s messages about living together in harmony and the need to stamp out racism were particularly powerful. We really enjoyed having Uncle Ron out to Valkstone and we look forward to his next visit.

The Japanese  Word of the Fortnight

さむいです(pronounced ‘samuides’) which means ‘cold’ is the Japanese Word for the rest of Term 2 and the first week of Term 3.  You can simply use ‘さむいです’ (‘samuides’) instead of ‘cold’ when you feel cold in the classroom and out in the yard.  Please be careful, ‘さむいです’ (‘samuides’) does NOT mean ‘cold to touch’

Thank you / ありがとうございます (pronounced ‘aligatoh gozaimas’) for your continuing support for our Japanese program.

ROBOCUP  4th PLACE

During Term 2, the Robotics Club has been working very hard during lunch times to build robotic creatures from Lego.

Four of the amazing robots were entered into the National Spike Prime Challenge. There were 118 entries from around Australia, and more than 50 of these were from Victoria.

Angeline,  Ash, Katherine and Jaylene from Grade 4 created Lulu the Guard Llama and took fourth place in the Victorian Division, winning the school a $100 dollar voucher from MTA!

Great work, girls! A big thanks to Liam from grade 6 for his help with the chicken design!

I would like to highlight the outstanding progress of Chi Chi and Phoebe, two drum students who have been playing exceptionally well in class. Their dedication and enthusiasm have resulted in impressive skills and a strong sense of rhythm.

Enrolment for our music program is now open! If your child is interested in exploring the world of music and learning an instrument at school, I encourage you to sign them up today.
