Womin Djeka – Hello and welcome to another edition of the ‘THE WESTERN PORT WORD’ which will continue to provide our community with a range of updates throughout the year.
Although this has been a shorter nine-week term, a significant number of positive events have occurred across the College with a selection of those highlighted below;
ANZAC Day:
It was a privilege to join our College Captains Andy Go and Kayde Finch at the Hastings ANZAC Day service. Andy and Kayde placed a wreath at the cenotaph during the service and represented our College exceptionally well. Our ADF mentor and School Chaplain Jack Waller, joined our College Vice Captains who also represented our College with pride at the Crib Point service to lay a wreath at the cenotaph on behalf of the school.
Reconciliation Week
Our Western Port Mob organized a fantastic array of events for all students during the 2023 Reconciliation week with the Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony and Yidiki Performance from Josh West from the Bunurong Land Council the highlight of the week. A Dance Ceremony from Bandok Toti, a lunchtime Marngrook game, Art Canvas/Tote Bag designing and a Kangaroo stir fry and bush bread cook up, rounded out an incredible cultural immersion for our entire school community. A big congratulations to our Western Port Mob for their organisation and running of events throughout reconciliation week with the support of Mrs Roy.
Cluster Music Initiative - Winter Concert
Our Director of Music Stuart Miller, along with our cluster music coordinator Adrian Allen organised our 2023 Winter music concert which saw a combination or Western Port bands, soloists and ensembles combine with our primary voices to entertain an adoring audience of over 170 family and community members. It is such a valuable experience for both our students and the students from our cluster primary schools, to perform in front of a large audience a these fantastic cluster music events.
Careers Expo:
Our Western Port Careers Expo was a very well attended event from both tertiary and vocational pathways organisations in support of our students pathways and career options. It was great to see all students from Years 7-12 join this event which encourages students to think about their future, and the opportunities that they can be seizing whilst at school (VET courses/work experience/early entry to tertiary providers). A big thanks to our Careers Practitioner Bec Parker for her organization of this important event for our students.
Inter School Sport
Inter School Sport is a great way for students to engage in extra curricular activities outside the classroom which connects to the school’s Sport Education and Physical Education Programs. As I reflect on the reports from our staff supporting these events, a highlight is the respectful way in which our students engage in Inter School sport which aligns to our College values. Well done to all Junior School and Senior School students who have represented our College with pride.
I would like to thank all members of our College community for a really positive term and I hope that you all have a safe and enjoyable mid-year holiday break.
