Winter Sport Planning

Planning for Sport and PE in the Winter Weather

Here at Trafalgar Primary School, we believe that regular physical activity is crucial for your child's physical, social, and emotional development. As a result, we aim to ensure that all of our students are able to enjoy the benefits of our Sport and PE program regardless of the weather that we encounter throughout the school year.

As we move into Term 2, our Sport and PE program has already begun to focus on what we refer to as Winter Sport. This involves a focus on outdoor sports such as AFL Football, Soccer, Netball, Tee-Ball, and Cross-Country running. It is important to remember that these sports are designed to be played outdoors, and cannot be fully experienced in our indoor gym alone. In addition, and as you would be well aware, it is important to remember that the weather at this time of year can often be cold and wet. As a result, some children can feel hesitant about participating in Sport and PE during the winter months.

To help address this discomfort, we would like to provide you with some suggestions as to how you can help prepare your child for Sport and PE in the winter weather.

We would like to reassure you that in periods of heavy and extended rainfall, or where it is otherwise deemed unsafe to do so, Sport and PE lessons will take place indoors. However, Sport and PE lessons will still take place outdoors on some cold winter days, on damp and muddy ovals, and through light and passing showers.

In order to prepare your child for Sport and PE in this type of weather, we kindly ask you to consider sending your child to school with the following items on the days  they have Sport and PE.

For your convenience, this information has been provided below:

Monday

 P3, P8, LA10, P2

Tuesday

LA8, LA9, LA7, P4

Wednesday

P7, P1, P5, P6, LA4, LA5, LA6

Thursday

LA4, LA5, LA6, P5, P6, P7, P8

Friday

LA7, LA8, LA9, LA10, P1, P2, P3, P4

1. A waterproof jacket: This will help to keep students warm and dry through cold weather and light showers that might occur during some outdoor activities.

2. Extra footwear: We suggest that your child brings an extra pair of socks and appropriate running shoes to change into before, or after, their Sport and PE lessons. This will prevent them from having wet feet and help to keep them comfortable throughout the remainder of the day.

3. Spare clothes: You may also like to consider sending your child with a spare set of clothes to change into after their PE lesson. Hopefully these clothes will only need to be used on very rare occasions. However, in the event that your child’s clothes do become wet or muddy, having a spare set of clothes on hand will help to keep them warm, dry, and comfortable during the rest of the school day.

If you have any concerns or questions about how our Sport and PE program will operate during the winter, please do not hesitate to contact us at your earliest convenience. We value your feedback and suggestions, and are always open to improving the Sport and PE program in any way possible.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.
