What a fabulous day we had last week at the Athletics track! First of all, I would like to thank those parents who gave up their precious time and came down to give us a hand with the event. You were extremely helpful. Also, thank you to all my colleagues for putting all their energy to make sure the event was successful. And last, thank you to all students for their engagement and effort in during the day. You are absolute champions!
Newlands staff are extremely proud to see how our students participated and collaborated in all races and games. They truly showed our school spirit! It was amazing to see how enthusiastically all students supported and cheered on the F/1 students in their races and congratulated them as they crossed the finish line.
Enjoy the video with the highlights of the day!
Next week, our students who came first, second, third and fourth in the 12, 11 and 10 year old races will be representing Newlands Primary School in the Districts Cross Country Championships. Good luck to all of them. Go Newlands!
F/1
Term 2 has started with exciting content we are learning in PE. Foundation students have been introduced to physical activities in which they are learning how to saltar (jump) with equilibrio (balance). We are using our brazos, manos y pies (arms, hands and feet) before, during and after the salto forward to keep our equilibrio. Year 1 students are refining saltar ability by landing on un pie and saltar in different directions and distances. We are participating in fun activities and games such as “El río revuelto” and “Zorros y liebres”. This skill is fundamental in many well-known sports our students might be like participating in such as AFL, Basketball and Rugby. It has been great to see how our students in F/1 collaborate and give feedback to each other to improve learning in PE.
2/3
In the last three weeks, Year 2 and 3 students have started learning and developing hand-eye coordination skills. We have been practising individual activities with pelotas (balls) of different size, material, and weight. Moreover, minor group games have been introduced. In these games, students are encouraged to pasar (to pass) the pelota to each other without dropping it. This is also an excellent opportunity to show basic teamwork strategies that can be later applied in more complex games and sports. Throughout this learning unit, students will have many opportunities to learn how to lanzar y atrapar una pelota de tenis with a single hand (dominant and non-dominant) as well as completing ten pases with a softball size pelota.
4/5/6
At the end of term 1, students in Years 4, 5 and 6 chose to learn about Netball in a democratic vote. Therefore, this term we are extremely grateful to Netball Australia for providing a professional coach who is coming for four weeks to teach us about this exciting sport. In the first two weeks, we have been learning different ways of pasar (passing) the pelota (ball) and atraparla (catch it) in different ways. Furthermore, we have improved our footwork skills such as pivoting. In most activities, students are encouraged to identify a range of solutions to some movement challenges they may encounter and practise the most effective ones. Despite being unable to use the basketball rings for a while as we wait for replacement bases, we will use our creativity to practise shooting in Netball. I am sure these lessons will be extra helpful for those students who made it into the Netball team for Interschool Sport Competition starting next week!
