What's happening in our learning spaces?

FOUNDATION

Welcome back to Term 2 after a wonderful and well deserved break for all. We are so excited to have all of our beautiful Foundation students return to school.

We shared all about our holidays by drawing fantastic illustrations of the places we went to, people we played with, things we saw, some experiences we didn’t quite enjoy and things we had fun doing! As communicators, we shared these experiences with our friends and our teachers. Some of our holiday adventures included:

  • Having fun climbing a mountain - Leo G
  • Going camping - Lincoln
  • Seeing the new Mario movie - Benjamin
  • Going to the zoo - Isabel
  • Not liking that it rained on Easter - Ruby
  • Having fun playing in the pool - Leo B

As writers, some of us had a go at writing these experiences in sentences. Remembering to sound out words, using finger spaces and fullstops. Those who have been practising their sight words are now using them in their writing. It is important that time is allocated to revise the words each day so that everyone can have success in their writing. Seeing how far our Foundation students have come with their writing in just 46 days is very heartwarming!

On Monday 24th of April, it is the Feast Day of Saint Fidelis. As a catholic faith community, we celebrated this event on Friday 28th of April as a whole school with Mass in the morning, followed by rounds of tabloid sport activities. As collaborators, we participated in many different games such as parachute, quoits, volleyball, noodle javelin, frisbee golf, bowling, dodgeball and chicken run. This was so much fun as we learned how to play new games and meet some of our peers in other year levels.

After we rested from our sports games, we spent some long awaited time with our buddies. We were thrilled to finally see our buddies after the Easter holidays. As learners, they helped us read the story of our patron Saint, Saint Fidelis and we drew pictures to match the story. We can’t wait to spend more time with our buddies in Term 2.

This week on Wednesday 3rd May, we have a wonderful learning opportunity for our inquiry into our own and our family’s history with an incursion from The History Box Ballarat.

Please also remember to bring back any library bags by Tuesday so that we can borrow a new book on Wednesday.

Have a wonderful week.

YEAR 1/2

Welcome to Term 2! It has been great to reconnect with all of our friends at school. We have spent time sharing our experiences from the school holidays and we have also enjoyed listening to others share their own experiences. It sounds like everyone is refreshed and ready for the exciting term ahead!

As learners we had the opportunity to actively participate in an ANZAC Day ceremony with the whole school community. We were respectful by standing still during the minute of silence, to remember the soldiers. To extend our thinking about ANZAC Day we have had time to listen to stories,  read a variety of non-fiction texts and observe images. As communicators we have engaged in conversations with our peers to share our discoveries and any wonderings that we might have.

To celebrate St. Fidelis Feast Day we engaged in a whole school mass by listening and responding to the prayers. We were very excited to participate in tabloid sports. We collaborated with students from other year levels to join in different activities such as volley ball catch, hoop and chook relays. It was lots of fun! We also got to enjoy a delicious hot lunch. As researchers we viewed an information text and observed images to find out about St Fidelis’ life. To sort out our thinking we got to collaborate with the Year 5 students to create a poster or booklet with our discoveries.

We are looking forward to our excursion to CERES this week and can’t wait to share our new discoveries with you!

YEAR3/4

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful and restful break and enjoyed your Easter celebrations.

We have been busy learning about ANZAC Day and our Patron Saint, Saint Fidelis!

On Monday 24th April, it was Saint Fidelis Feast Day, however, we weren't at school on this day so we celebrated this on Friday instead. We engaged in a Mass at St Fidelis Church, after that we had the time and opportunity to engage in different learning opportunities about Saint Fidelis, including making our own Word Search or Crossword once we found out information about Saint Fidelis. We then engaged in some different Tabloid Sports rotations who were led by our Year 6 Leaders.

To find out more about ANZAC day and to unpack its importance to us, today we read books and identified the important symbols we see during ANZAC day. We read books including 'Midnight: the Story of a Lighthorse' and 'ANZAC Day Parade'. We used the information we discovered to document the importance of events, symbols and traditions including a minute's silence, the Last Post, Wreaths & Poppies, Dawn Service, Parade and Soldiers.

YEAR 5/6

What a fantastic welcome back to Term 2 it has been for our Year 5/6 students! Although it was a short week, it was jam packed with lots of learning and fun!

On Wednesday, we had an opportunity to engage with learning about ANZAC Day and the impact the ANZACS have had on our communities. The students read the story “Archies Letter” based on the real life experiences of Archie Flanagan - an ANZAC hero during the second world war. The students were fascinated and intrigued by the life of the soldiers who sacrificed so much for us. We learnt about the traditions associated with ANZAC Day such as the importance of the Last Post and the Dawn Service. We will continue to explore the story of Archie’s Letter this week and unpack the life of this incredible man.

On Friday we celebrated our school's patron saint, Saint Fidelis. We began the day with a whole school Mass to come together as a school community to reflect on Saint Fidelis’ life and dedication to his faith. We then split off into 10 groups across the school and played a variety of games led by our Year 6 students. We would like to congratulate the Year 6’s on demonstrating such positive leadership throughout the day and are proud of the way they conducted themselves and encouraged all the students to participate in each of the games. We ended the day with hot food day which is always exciting and then a visit from our buddies! The Year 6 students had the chance to complete an activity with their foundation buddies, whilst the Year 5 students paired up with the 1/2 students to share their learning about Saint Fidelis. It was such a wonderful day full of fun and laughter!

This week our students are looking forward to attending “The Huddle” excursion at North Melbourne Football Club. Each of the 5/6 classes will attend the excursion that integrates STEM and sport in a fun and interactive way.

Year 5/6 OS will attend their excursion on Monday May 1st

Year 5/6 GT will attend their excursion on Thursday May 4th

Year 5/6 AO will attend their excursion on Monday May 8th

We can't wait to share with you what we learn on our days out!

This Term brings with it the joy and excitement of the Year 5/6 camp! This year we will be attending ‘Camp Weekaway’.
