Classroom Supports

EAL

An EAL (English as an Additional Language) student list is published at the start of each year. EAL support in available in some classes on a timetabled schedule. The EAL support staff predominantly works in the classroom but may also withdraw students when appropriate.

Inclusion

An Inclusion student list is published at the start of each year. There are also a number of students who require additional support in the classroom but are not funded through Program for Disabilities (PSD) for support. Where possible, these students will continue to be supported through Inclusion or other Education Support staff and Learning Tutors in 2022, allocated to support students in classes. All Inclusion and/or Education Support staff are managed in the classroom by the teacher who directs the work provided to each student. If the nominated students are absent for the lesson, the Support staff will be able to assist other students in the class.

Teachers of Inclusion students are expected to complete Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and to provide appropriate reporting and assessments in consultation with the Inclusion Co-ordinator and the Engagement and Wellbeing Team Leader. IEPs also need to be completed for all Koorie and Out of Home Care students. Teachers will also be invited to attend the Student Support Group (SSG) meetings.

Literacy and Numeracy Supports

Year 7 and 8 English classes may be timetabled into the Library once a week for reading/returning and borrowing sessions and Maths classes into C2 (Numeracy) for up to two classes each week. The College employs a Literacy Support person to work with up to 15 nominated students and these students are generally withdrawn from specific classes for targeted literacy support, under the direction of the MYLNS Team Leader.

Teachers may request additional support in their classes by first discussing their needs with the Assistant Principal/Teaching and Learning and/or the Subschool Team Leader. Teachers of Senior School classes may also discuss additional support through discussion with the Year Level Leader and Senior SubSchool Manager.

MYLNS

The College receives additional MYLNS funding to provide literacy and numeracy support to nominated Y8, Y9 and Y10 students in 2022. These staff are managed by the MYLNS Team Leader in consultation with Assistant Principal, Teaching and Learning and work with the students directly as needed. The MYLNS teachers will also work with all teachers and classroom-based ES staff to build increased understanding of effective literacy and numeracy strategies for use with all students. This may include classroom visits, team teaching, lesson planning and formalised Professional Learning.
