From the Deputy Principals

Academic and Leadership Recognition

The College would like to promote to our families our newly updated Academic and Leadership Recognition document. It provides an overview of formal College-level  recognition opportunities. These are complemented by recognition that occurs throughout the year at a year and department level. The document can now be accessed on your SEQTA Learn and Engage homepages.

You will note our reference to Grade Point Averages (GPA). These take the achievement in each subject, give the grade a numerical value and then average those to create the GPA. Mazenod uses a four-point scale, making all A grades a GPA of four. Core and Elective GPAs are considered separately. The scale is as below.

There has been an alteration to the previous criteria for receiving recognition for Awards of Excellence based on an elective GPA. We have included the addition of a core GPA requirement of at least 5Bs. The rationale for this was to continue to award excellence for elective subjects but now with a more clearly articulated requirement for overall academic excellence.

Another change is the High Achievers' Lunch and certificate presentation, which will now be based on whole year achievement rather than by the semester. The certificate recognition will be on Semester Two reports, as well as hard-copy certificates presented at the first school assembly of each year with the celebratory lunch held near that same time.

You will also find details of scholarship opportunities available each year.

This document is live now and relates to all 2023 recognition. The College is finalising a new calculation for Dux of the College. This will be published shortly and will take effect for students commencing Year 12 study in 2024.

We see this recognition as an effective and suitable honorific for our highest academic achievers and we hope it provides motivation to all students in their pursuit of personal excellence.

Save the Date - ySafe Presentation

Please be aware of an upcoming parent information session. On Tuesday, May 23 will have invited an online safety and behaviours specialist presentation group to the College. Every year, we provide sessions to our students, and this session provides complementary support to families.

This practical, strategy-rich session will cover the most important points that all families need to know about online safety, covering key information about social media and gaming, screen time recommendations and step-by-step instructions on how to set up a cyber safe home for children of all ages.

If you’ve ever struggled with getting your children off their games and into bed, worried about the content of the games that they are playing or felt concerned that your child was spending too much time in the digital world, this workshop is for you.

All parents will receive access to helpful follow up resources after the session.

Mazenod College School TV

The College provides resources to families from a variety of sources. One such is Mazenod College School TV. This resource bank was developed in conjunction with renowned child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. The resource set is award-winning, offering guidance on everything from fostering connections to screen-time management. All of it designed to support better mental health and wellbeing for young people. They are presented as a series of reports in combination of videos and written guidance.  Our dashboard is here: https://mazenod.wa.schooltv.me/

On reviewing the resources, one came across a special report on parenting styles. If you haven't used School TV before, you may like to look at this. The report begins with a short quiz before an examination of parenting styles. Find it here: https://mazenod.wa.schooltv.me/wellbeing_news/special-report-parenting-styles
