Cumberland Athletics Carnival

Cumberland students enjoyed a fun and competitive day at the athletics carnival last week. The student’s positive attitude and behaviour was exemplary. The students could choose from a wide variety of events including both track and field events. The Aitken College sports staff and VCAL students worked tirelessly throughout the day and deserve high praise for their efforts. The level of sportsmanship displayed by students was impressive, with students competing against each other, yet acknowledging their efforts and successes. Thank you to all parents who attended and helped make the day such a success. Congratulations Cumberland students!

Year 4 Camp

We wish the Year 4 students the best time at Camp Weekaway next week from Wednesday 22 May to Friday 24 May as they try new and exciting activities such as the rope course, flying fox, the maze, canoeing, cooking damper and marshmallows and generally have a fabulous time! We cannot wait to hear all about it. The camp is an important part of the Life Skills curriculum and it aims to:

  • increase initiative, self-reliance and independence
  • encourage determination and persistence
  • foster an appreciation and protection of the natural environment
  • provide opportunities for team work and collaboration
  • teach consideration of others
  • encourage a sense of responsibility
  • engender a love of learning

4A’s Day at the Farm

Last Friday 4A went to the farm for a surprise. We saw two baby calves. If you don’t know what calves are, they are baby cows. Their breed can grow up to 3 metres high or more. When the two Year 10 girls fed the calves, one calf named Leroy finished it in under 1 minute. Then he started fighting for the other bottle of milk that Jeffrey was drinking. They were so adorable, and we were sad when we had to leave. We had fun at the farm!

Managing Your Child’s Anxiety

Michael Grose, one of Australia’s leading parent educators, outlines several strategies to help manage anxiousness in his parenting blog. “Sufficient sleep, good nutrition and exercise are essential for anxious kids. Support your child to adhere to their optimal bedtime so they wake naturally each morning, reduce sugar, take care of their gut health through good nutrition and encourage regular exercise for optimal mental health.” In his article, he includes strategies such as explaining anxiety, helping your child to recognise anxiety-inducing events, responding with empathy, managing anxious moments and getting the fundamentals right. Year 6 Poetry

My Family

My family is the world around me.

My father is the ocean, sometimes calm and sometimes kooky.

My mother is the ground, you may not always acknowledge that she’s there but when you fall she’s always there to catch you.

My older sister is the sun, she’s always there but sometimes she’s hidden behind a cloud.

My younger brother is a cloud, normally happy and fluffy but when he’s angry he's angry.

And me, I’m all the people on earth trying to understand the world around me.

Chocolate Box

The white chocolate is my sweet hope and pure joy.

The pistachio chocolate is my terrible sadness.

The dark chocolate is my bitter and sour anger.

The almond chocolate is my intense fear.

And the orange segment chocolate is my unstoppable compassion.

Together these chocolates make me who I am...

A chocolate box.
