In the last couple of issues of TEMpo we learnt about the beginnings of the East Malvern Hockey Club with a team called the Taranakis and then how the VAHA came about.

In this edition, we follow the Taranakis as they join the VAHA.

In early 1908, the Taranakis applied to join the Victorian Amateur Hockey Association.

However, after the end of the 1907 season, the VAHA adopted a policy that clubs should have district names.  Iona became Elsternwick, Waitangi became St Kilda and Etcetera became Malvern.

Taranakis, denied the name Malvern, chose ‘East Malvern’ and so became the East Malvern Hockey Club.  East Malvern joined the VAHA in time for the commencement of the 1908 season.

The VAHA competition now consisted of 16 teams, divided into ‘A’ grade and ‘B’ grade:

James Dunlop (one of the founders of the East Malvern Hockey Club) donated a trophy, the Dunlop Cup*, for ‘B’ grade.

The 1908 season was very successful for East Malvern, they won the premiership, the Dunlop Cup came home!

Next season, East Malvern would be in ‘A’ Gade.

*A few years after East Malvern’s victory, Fairfield won the premiership three years in a row, and was so able to keep the Dunlop Cup.  It is now in the collection of Yarra Valley Hockey Club.
