Lions International Youth of the Year Quest

A number of Marian students have taken part in the Lions International Youth of the Year Quest in 2020. Girls attended competitions organised by Footscray and Sunshine Lions and the Leo Clubs of Marian College and Brimbank. All students remarked positively on the experience. As winners of the Marian and Brimbank Leo Heats respectively, Farah Besisou and Anastasia Mavaega, competed in the regional final held at the Italian Club on Furlong Road. Although neither student will proceed to the next stage, both girls represented themselves and the College with aplomb.

March is National Autoimmune Diseases Awareness Month! The invisible diseases!

What does this mean?

An autoimmune disease is a condition in which your immune system mistakenly attacks your body.

The immune system normally guards against germs like bacteria and viruses. When it senses these foreign invaders, it sends out an army of fighter cells to attack them.

Normally, the immune system can tell the difference between foreign cells and your own cells.

In an autoimmune disease, the immune system mistakes part of your body, like your joints or skin, as foreign. It releases proteins called auto-antibodies that attack healthy cells.

Some autoimmune diseases target only one organ. Type 1 diabetes mellitus damages the pancreas and this is very different from Type 2 Diabetes. Other diseases include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Lupus), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy and Psoriasis.
