Principal's Report
Every opportunity!
Another Term has come to an end and we have so much to celebrate.
At Cobram Secondary College, we believe that every student matters and every opportunity is taken. I’ve been proud of our students’ achievements this term and pleased they are making the most of every opportunity.
On a whole school level, we’ve made huge progress with student learning. In the past three years, we have implemented the Illuminate programme, a whole-school programme focusing on reading and comprehension strategies. This helps with readers of all year levels. We’ve commenced work in writing and will work on writing strategies across subject areas. Our work is paying off!
According to the current NAPLAN growth data, our students in Year 9 are achieving higher growth rates in Reading and Writing than the state average. This is a direct result of the hard work of staff and students working together to lift results.
On an individual student level, we have had many examples of students making the most of their opportunities. On Wednesday, Ellie Jones attended an awards ceremony at Parliament House in Melbourne. Ellie was one of six finalists of the VCE Leadership Awards. To be nominated is an honour. To get as far as she did shows that students in small rural towns and schools can achieve just as much as our city counterparts.
We’ve had a 100% success rate with Aspire early entry to Latrobe University. The successful applicants will receive an early offer to Latrobe University on the condition that they meet the minimum ASPIRE ATAR and standard course prerequisites (minimum study score) for their chosen course. Entry to the Latrobe University Aspire early entry is based on outstanding community service and volunteer work and represents the hard work and commitment our students have to their studies and the local community. Congratulations go to Cam Johnston, Claire Baxter, Eliza Crosby, Ellie Jones, Emma Bailey, Georgie Denson and Mariah Yarnold. Further congratulations to Ellie Jones for her early entry to ACU and the Australian National University.
Congratulations to Year 12 student Freyja Black on being awarded the 2020 Melbourne Principals' Scholarship which provides support to students who gain entry to the University of Melbourne. This award is in recognition of Freyja’s outstanding academic achievements and contribution to the school and wider community. Congratulations and well done, Freyja!
Our students have excelled in sport, both at school and in the community. The team representing the school at the GMD came 3rd overall, which is a fantastic achievement considering many of our competitors were substantially larger schools. Congratulations to Zarli Kerr and Sierra Tejones, who won Age Champions.
Every student matters…all staff care
We’ve had a busy term with curricular and extra-curricular offerings. Our Cows Create Careers programme has now concluded, with Ted and Blue leaving us last week. Our VCAL students went on an industry tour and the whole school took part in the Speed Careering. Our HPV team of staff and students have been working on the HPV vehicle and training in order to be ready to compete in November. With the warmer weather, we’ve started some lunchtime activities, bringing staff and students together to go for walks or play sport together. We will continue this into term 4.
