Maryborough 2019

HPV SUCCESS

Over the past weekend (Thursday – Sunday), 22 students headed up to Maryborough to compete in the Energy Breakthrough. This is an event which attracts over 10,000 competitors and spectators, including over 200 schools from across Victoria and Australia, where students create a presentation to a panel of three judges, are judged on their knowledge of the components of the vehicle and the major event being the 24 hour endurance race, where they race in teams of up to 8 continuously for 24 hours against other schools.

Whilst a lot of the focus is on the race itself, there is a significant amount of work which happens away from the race track where a big focus is on the benefits of active or human powered transport and the negative impacts of cars and other forms of transport on the environment.

We have had a fantastic year, with many highlights, including but not limited to the following:

  • raising almost $3500 in sponsorship and developing strong community relationships with local businesses
  • Competing as a community team as the rebranded - Mornington Racing Team
  • Having our first ever girls team for a very long time compete at the Energy Breakthrough
  • Continuing our strong partnerships with our local primary schools at Benton Junior College and Mornington Primary School.

The weekend provided our students with another fantastic opportunity to be involved in what is the largest school sporting, science and technology event in all of Australia. The students were able to learn so much in the lead-up to and during the event as well as form many new friendships with like-minded students across multiple year levels.

The results from the event are as follows:
