STUDENT ACTIVITIES

CONNECT PROGRAM

POLICE PRESENTATIONS

As part of our connect program, years 7, 8 and 9 took part in a police presentation. Students were educated by police from Mornington and Rosebud Police station around the dangers of vaping, cyber security and alcohol consumption. Police encouraged students to consider the consequences of their choices and make smart decisions.

NINJA WARRIOR EXCURSION

Year 8 students had a fantastic time testing their agility and perseverance at ‘The Compound’, the training place of contestants on Australian Ninja Warrior. Students were coached by 6 trainers as they moved around a variety of challenging obstacles. All students worked hard, persevered and had a go even at the most difficult tasks. They were a pleasure to take out and spend the day with and were positive representatives of our college. Many expressed gratitude and appreciation for the day, demonstrating their manners and thoughtful reflective natures.

HANDBRAKE TURN

Year 10 and 11 students were given the opportunity to learn basic automotive skills from qualified mechanics through a program called Handbrake Turn. They learnt how to check for the 6 different car fluids, how to jack the car, remove and change a tyre, and how to check their brake pads.

REACH WORKSHOP

Year 11 students took part in a REACH workshop designed to encourage empathy, open authentic expression and respect for each other. Year 11 students were open and mature in their participation.

YEAR 9 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE STUDENTS - Tips and Tricks on Being Sustainable at Home

Everyday Things:

  • Keep your lights off as much as possible! Open curtains for light and heat!
  • Use heating and cooling only when needed! Open windows for the breeze and put on a jumper!
  • Use multi-use bags and objects as well as reusable drink bottles! It is both helping you and the environment
  • Order out less! Or if you do, support places that work towards less waste!
  • Repair torn clothes and give them to friends and family when they are too small! (Op-Shop works just as good)
  • Try to limit the amount of packaged food you eat, and try not to waste any food!
    Home Installations:
  • Get solar panels for the roof, these are a great way to sustainably power your home!
  • Solar-powered pool heating
  • Solar-powered tv remote (Yes, they exist!)
  • Build possum boxes for the local wildlife!
  • LED light bulbs are much better for the environment than any other!
  • Insulate your home so you don’t have to waste any heating! (Double glazed windows can help too!)
     Going the Extra Mile:
  • Try to encourage others to do the same as you, even just close friends or family!
  • Buy an electric vehicle! While they are expensive, they ultimately are much better!
  • Advocate for change whether it be at school or in your local community!!
Remember that a little can go a long way! Even starting with the small things can make a big difference!!

FORENSIC SCIENCE YEAR 9

In Yr 9 Forensic Science today we learned about facial reconstruction using skulls. These are three excellent examples of work where the students were given a model of a skull along with an age and race for their facial reconstruction. Students had to research the facial muscles and learn to use markers to pinpoint features and aspects of the face on which to build up facial tissue.

They then found a person online with features to support their understanding of the facial structure at different ages and ethnicity.

THE PICASSO  CENTURY EXCURSION

During Semester 2, our Year 10, 11 and 12 Visual Arts/Studio Arts students attended the National Gallery of Victoria’s blockbuster exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s work, and the many artists with whom he associated or influenced during his very long, productive and sensationally controversial life. This show was a truly “once-in-lifetime” experience.

Each year level who viewed the exhibition had a different focus, but every student had the opportunity to immerse themselves in numerous art styles of the 20th Century, including Realism, Cubism, Surrealism and Symbolism. Exposure to a range of painting, printmaking and sculptural forms enables students to gradually determine their own appreciation of art and this excursion certainly allowed them this unique opportunity.

After viewing the Picasso show, we all walked to the NGV Australia art museum in Federation Square to be inspired by the elite artwork of last year’s VCE Studio Arts and Art students’ in the TopArts exhibition, followed by a confronting viewing of Ron Mueck’s “Mass” sculpture which comprises 100 large-scale resin sculptures of the human skull heaped into a huge mound.

The Art and Design departments of MESC strive to provide the best art education experience possible by conducting such outings and we thank the parents of those students for allowing us to organise these events.

"PASIC  PALACE "

Reservations Now Open

Brigitte, (Yr. 11 VCAL) has officially opened the “Pasic Palace” Bug Hotel in the Food Tech Vegie Garden.  As part of VCAL Personal Development, students were asked to choose their own project.  The Bug Hotel was made for critters to check in to a relaxing haven away from pesky predators who might otherwise get a free lunch.  The Hotel caters for small to medium sized bugs offering a variety of different rooms and soft furnishings like pine needles, bamboo, pine cones, wood, twigs and gum nuts.  During the day, the bugs are free to pollinate the nearby vegie garden to help our students use fresh herbs in Food Tech classes.
