Interschool Karting Challenge

Mr Andrew Devoy

The Annual Interschool Karting Challenge took place last Friday 2 September at Ipswich City Dirt Kart Club in Willowbank. This is the 9th year it has run and included the following schools; Mueller College, Sandgate District SHS and Bray Park SHS making a field of approximately 12 karts. The teams got there early to ensure they were able to get some practice and qualifying in before the weather came early afternoon and interrupted the day. This prevented the main races from running due to safety concerns but all schools were able to bank qualifying times earlier in the day. This was enough to calculate average team times and determine placings on the day. The Marist College Ashgrove Karts of Year 10 (Red Bull) and Year 9 (Shell Helix) came 1st and 2nd respectively with a Sandgate Distract SHS Kart achieving 3rd on the Day. Our very own Marley Chan (Year 10) achieved the fastest lap of the day at 38.21 secs. We could not have done any better. All students are to be commended on the way they conducted themselves on the day and they all drove very well.

Congratulations to all members of our teams:

  • Year 9 Team - Jayden Cole, Lachlan McMillan, Ignatius Hallman, George Philp, Tim Tully
  • Year 10 Team - George Bell, Marley Chan, Braith Crossingham, Royden Maelaua, Max Reibelt.

A big thank you to Craig and Bruce from “Onguard Safety Training” for their continued support of this event supplying all medallions and trophy’s for the day as well as scrutineering.

A special thanks to Matt Dempsey for coaching the Year 9 team. Also to Peter Gaiter and Blair Whitlock who provided support, safety and were track marshals all day. A special thank you to Sr Liz Dangerfield who is there in an official capacity as our registered nurse. Thank you also to Nathan Aye and the kitchen staff for providing packed lunches on the day. Lastly, thank you to the support of Mr Newman, Mr Noble (Head of Boarding) and the College Leadership Team for supporting this special event.

A great day was had by all and we look forward to next year.
