Word Mania
Alison Sanza
Literacy Leader
This competition was open to schools across Australia and New Zealand and a total of 104 schools participated.
Our Year 7 students worked against the clock to create words using a prescribed set of letters. The competition was a lot of fun, and participating helped to build their vocabulary and spelling skills as well as provided the opportunity to work competitively either individually or in pairs.
The collective efforts of the students were automatically calculated and combined to result in the the school's 7th place ranking - so this really was a result of which the whole cohort can be proud!

The competition element was a great motivator for students to finish their classwork a little earlier and log in to the Literacy Planet platform. It was great to see their responses as we updated the ladder each week and could see our names dominating the top positions!

I really enjoyed Word Mania – a game where you are given 15 letters and have to make as many words with those letters as you can. The longer the word, the more points you score. Brunswick Secondary came 7th in Australia and New Zealand this year and it’s safe to say we are pretty proud. We were always super enthusiastic about playing this game, and we were always asking when we could play it next. I am really glad we played this game, and it was a good way to 'switch on'. It was so much fun!

Thank you for the word games in Literacy Planet. They were fun and it was fun to play it in class. I like having special word lists just for me.

It was great to see, after tons of hard word-making effort, that BSC achieved seventh place. Plus, it helped me to improve my spelling and writing skills.

Charlie and Will carried our team. Their success encouraged others in the class to give it a go and keep playing. Eamon and I enjoyed supporting our classmates.
