SA State Training Awards

Kass Holmes, Vocational Education Training Leader

Candidate for School-based Trainee of the Year

Connor Price was recommended by the VET Leader to apply for the SA School Based Trainee of the Year. In 2021 he completed the Certificate II in Horticulture and through completing his placement, he was offered a traineeship with the company he was with. The company is a landscape and construction company who complete the full range of gardening needs.

His commitment and drive towards his future goals made him the ideal candidate. Connor is a hard worker with a great attitude and is charismatic. With high praises from his employer and support from the school, he wrote an application outlining his goals, what he had learnt from his VET course and how they were aiding him in achieving his future pathway. Statements like these were what got him to the next stage of an interview:

“This course has really had a positive influence on me. It has changed me a lot, I wake up early keen to get going and I have started to live a happier and healthier lifestyle.”

Connor did not make it to the final listing for state winner. However his manager was so impressed with his efforts in the application and with his work attitude in general, that he nominated him for employee of the month for their company, which he won. Connor has demonstrated a wide range of skill and his hard work is recognised and rewarded.

Recently, Connor had the privilege of travelling with a small team from the company to complete a project in a regional area. Due to his skills and knowledge development of how to complete tasks and work as part of the team, he was given this opportunity. When speaking to his employer he stated that most of the staff forget he is in his first year of his traineeship.

We would like to congratulate Connor on an amazing year in his traineeship and wish him all the best.
