Maritime Camp

Kass Holmes, Vocational Education Training Leader

Three Aberfoyle Park High School students applied for an all expenses paid week long maritime camp based in Tasmania. Students had to outline their interest in the industry and experience with boats, marine life and/or the ocean/seas. All three wrote excellent applications and two were given the opportunity to attend.  With over 50 students applying, 16 students from around the state were chosen and Caleb and Harry both represented our school.

From 27 June to 1 July the students engaged in activities relating to understanding the maritime industry. Going to Tasmania they engaged in a number of activities. The students experienced a program fully immersing them in the maritime sector with a range of workshop activities, industry and world-class testing facility tours, practical simulations, study pathways and career information.

Based in Hobart they stayed at the Australian Maritime College (AMC) learning about the courses available and the facilities available on and off campus.

They completed an activity at Beauty Point, which is the seafaring training centre as well as practical training in bespoke shore facilities and on board a fleet of training vessels.

The students stated that the experience was excellent and introduced them to new opportunities. Both students greatly valued the experience and are now looking at applying to attend AMC once completing high school.
