News from the Chicken Coop

URGENT! Chicken Roster volunteers are needed for school holiday duties.

School holiday dates are available from 19 September right through until Sunday 2 October, to help care for the chickens. Your family can choose how many days you would like to do, 3 or 4 days in a row would be ideal. Chicken Duty involves letting the chooks out of their coop in the mornings and putting them away in the evenings, checking that they have enough water each day and feeding them as needed. Occasional cleaning out of chicken manure will also be required. Your reward will be wonderful fresh eggs. You will be sent an information sheet with all the details you need.  Please email Melinda Kerwin mkerwin@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au with your preferred dates if you are interested in being added to the roster. First in, first choice of dates!

Egg Lotto

The next draw will be on Monday, 12 September. There will be several dozen eggs available to win so get your $1 raffle ticket soon. The Environment Team will be out the front of the school on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15-3:30pm to sell tickets to parents. Students can also buy tickets in the Passive Play area most mornings or ask someone in the Year 5/6 rooms. All money raised goes directly into the upkeep of our chickens.

School Grown Veggies and St John’s Worm Juice

We have been growing iceberg lettuce, cos lettuce and spring onions in our wicking boxes and they are now ready to sell to our school families. The lettuces are $2 each so come and buy a couple and support the hard work our gardening club have been doing.

We are also selling Worm Juice. Our ‘Worm Juice’ is actually worm wee that we have collected from the worm farms that we have at school. St John’s Worm Juice is a liquid organic fertiliser that your plants will love! It’s fabulous for fruit and vegetables as well as all flowering plants.

It costs only $2 for 2 Litres. What a bargain! The money earned from these sales, supplements the upkeep of our chickens and maintains the worm farms.

Wonder Recycling Rewards Program

This is the last week to send in your plastic bread bags for the Wonder Recycling Rewards Program. Any brand of plastic bread bags are acceptable and please remember to shake the crumbs out before sending them to school. There is a collection box in the office area to drop them into. Every kilo of plastic bags we collect goes towards redeeming free sports equipment for our school.

We will be posting the boxes off later this week so after Friday we will no longer be collecting bread bags.

Thanks for your support,

The Environment Team
