The Reckless Love of God

In Luke chapter 15, Jesus tells a series of three stories which illustrate the love of God: the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son. As the students in 5A explained in Worship, ‘lost’ here means that they were separated from the people who love them. In the same way, we can find ourselves separated from God. The great news is that he doesn’t leave us there. He loves us so much that he gives everything to find us.

In Worship, 5A led us in the song ‘Reckless Love’, by Cory Asbury. While the word ‘reckless’ usually has negative connotations, here it is used to describe the incredible love God has for us.

As Asbury explains, ‘When I use the phrase the reckless love of God, I’m not saying that God himself is reckless. I am, however, saying that the way he loves is…His love bankrupted heaven for you. His love doesn’t consider himself first. His love isn’t cautious. He gives his heart so completely, so preposterously, that if refused, most would consider it irreparably broken. Yet he gives himself away again. Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God.’
