How the Students are feeling

The start of week 4 in term two usually means the holidays have become a distant memory and winter is emerging. This is still the case even in our present state of remote school learning. This week we wanted to check up on the students to see how they were feeling. My thanks go to Mrs Ziino head of Wellbeing at the campus for putting together a quick and simple survey for students to let us know how they are going, during Tutor Group. Click the smiley face for Good, the OK for not so good and the thumbs down for feeling down. When a student clicked the OK for not so good or the thumbs down, they were taken to a further set of questions to ascertain just how low or unhappy they were feeling. They were also provided with some great resources and ideas focused on feeling better.  The survey also provided students the opportunity to email Mrs Ziino directly for extra support.

A Quick snap shot of the results from the Tutor Group on Monday 4th May 2020, sees approximately 74% of students who responded to the survey were feeling Good, whilst 24% were feeling just ok, or not so good and a very small percentage gave the thumbs down. House Leaders and Learning Advisors will be able to follow up on those students who felt less than good. We want our students to be honest about how they are feeling so we can support them with strategies, activities and conversations. I encourage all students to fill in the survey during Tutor Group at least once or twice a week, so we can check in with you.

AVILA HOUSE STAYING CONNECTED

While remote learning has presented its challenges, it certainly hasn’t deterred the students in Avila House from staying connected. Each week students in Avila are challenged to think or act creatively and contribute in their own unique way to the Tutor Group challenge. By doing so they develop a sense of pride and self-worth, remain connected with their peers, engage in alternative styles of thinking, and have some fun and a giggle along the way. Week 1’s challenge saw students attempt to juggle with each student’s attempt from their respective Tutor Group added together to determine which was group could juggle the longest. Last week’s challenge was inspired by the Pizza meditation shared by Ms Ziino. The challenge: to share our love of food (and pizza) and create our own zany pizza inspirations. Check out the photos of some of the awesome pizza creations made by our Avila students.

Campus Assembly

One of the highlights for me during any term is the campus assembly. Our first one this term was to be held on Tuesday, 5 May 2020, however with remote schooling, we needed to think outside the square or in at our campus, the Piazza. Students were invited to watch a pre-recorded assembly with Mr Black, and the Deputy Principals conveying a message to the campus community. However the missing piece of the assembly was of course the students. Whilst I had some students present, those who have needed to be at school, we all agreed it did not feel the same. The Piazza comes alive not with the House Flags or the stage, but with the energy, participation and presence of our College captains and the students and teachers of each House. I have set all students a gratitude challenge, to email their House Leader a message of gratitude to a teacher or a member of staff that has helped them with remote learning. The reason for sending the messages to the House Leader is to support House Spirit. I hope all students were able to find time to send a message of gratitude.

I had the distinct privilege of attending the Augustine House Assembly held on Friday, 1 May 2020. As you see by the screen shot, nearly 80 participants made the effort to log on and join in a very meaningful, insightful and motivational assembly. Thank you to the Augustine House Captains, Emily and Deng for your kind invitation. I look forward to attending more House assemblies.

This week the College Captains, myself and Mr Brannan held a zoom meeting to discuss how best the college leaders could support the students. They had some great ideas and I think students will be pleasantly surprised over the next few weeks as the captains start to roll out their new initiatives in each of their portfolios.

Sr Mary Glowrey Feast Day

COVID-19 could not stop Glowrey House from coming together via zoom to celebrate the life of Sr Mary Glowrey on her feast day. The spirit and courage of Sr Mary feeds our tolerance and resilience during this strange and difficult time of COVID-19. Thank you to Glowrey House for your kind invitation to celebrate with you Mary’s special day. The reading were beautiful as were the thoughtful prayers. We do pray every day that the Spirit of God be our gentle guide and the spirit of Mary Glowrey provide the energy for us to stay connected to one another now and always.

Thank you Glowrey House.

Finally I wish you all a safe and productive week.
