Working & Giving with Joy
Colossians 3:23 says, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters," and was a theme in the Secondary School assembly this week. Excellence is one of the four RISE principles that we strive for at Tyndale and it has been wonderful to see our students pursuing it in a variety of areas over the last couple of weeks. Whether it's the excellent results the Maths students attained in the Maths Competition, the skill and flair shown at the Music Night or the beautiful and meticulous work of the Year 8 English class, the pursuit of excellence is pivotal to the growth and development of our students.
One of the things I truly love about our School is that we have always had a heart for those who are hurting. Week 8 is Anti-Poverty Week and donation bins for non-perishable items have been distributed to classes, these will only be staying until Monday Week 9 when they'll be collected to contribute to hampers for the local community. Samaritan's Purse, Christmas Child Appeal Shoeboxes have also gone out to classes and students will be collecting toys and stationery items to send overseas. It's a wonderful opportunity for us all to fill a need in someone else's life.
I had the opportunity to visit our Tyndale Murray Bridge campus last week when Evan, Claire and Aleisha visited the Murray Bridge assembly to share about the Kenya and Kokoda trips. Evan's enthusiasm, Aleisha's passion and Claire's heart-felt message were all well received. It's no small feat to stand in front of an entire school and share about your own experiences, but they presented beautifully.
The Mayor's Short Story Challenge also saw five of our Secondary students shortlisted for their short stories. Congratulations, Sean Kelley, Adelle Ocampo, Angel Rivera, Sharna Begg and Magriethe Van Wyk on your brilliant writing. Angel Rivera was awarded the prize for best short story in the Year 8-10 category for Alexandrina. The Presentation Night acknowledged the achievement of students from across the Yankalilla, Victor Harbor and Alexandrina Council areas.

"The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas"
In English this term we have been reading ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’, a Holocaust novel about the unlikely friendship between Bruno, a Nazi officer’s son, and Shmuel, a Jewish boy who lives inside a concentration camp. The story is told through the innocent eyes of Bruno who is oblivious to the horrific events surrounding him. Ultimately, the message of the story is that beneath it all, we are all the same.
We have created some ‘quilt squares’ using inspiration from the themes of the novel. I have been really impressed with the attention to detail and thought that has gone into creating these. Fantastic work, Year 8’s!
