Meet a Scientist!

Hosted by the Royal Women's Hospital

The United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science recognises the critical role women and girls play in science and technology.

At present, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women and only 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science-related fields.

The Women’s (Hospital) is dedicated to improving the health of women, supporting vulnerable women, and advocating for women’s rights. We are passionate about inspiring the next generation of women to pursue a career in science, nursing, midwifery, allied health, biomedical engineering, medicine, and research.

We advocate for change, gender equity and full and equal access to, and participation in, science for women and girls.

Through our Meet a Scientist event we hope to inspire students to pursue a career in science, help them understand the paths and opportunities through higher education and beyond, and hear directly from our research scientists about their own journey, their advice and their achievements.

9 Year 9s...

were selected to participate in this program which took part on Thursday 11th February via a webinar.  The students heard real life examples of women in a variety of roles, as scientists, at the Royal Women’s Hospital.

They spoke of the importance of the placenta and how to identify cerebral palsy in premature babies and toddlers.  Also what their jobs entailed and how they transitioned from secondary school to their current positions.

Many of the students were surprised to hear that presenters were not always the best in their class, in fact some had not achieved the required ATARS and had to find alternative paths!

This was a very enjoyable and informative session for our students.
